The mission of BNI is to help members grow their businesses through referrals. But learning how to run a business can be a side effect of joining BNI. Lorena has seen this at work. A dentist named Lupita went to a BNI meeting as a visitor.
Lorena Medina, National Director of BNI Mexico, joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to share a story that shows BNI is more than referrals. One of the biggest challenges that entrepreneurs have is that no one ever taught them how to run a business.
Education coordinators can provide short summaries of an episode or play a clip from one. Hand out a transcript at a meeting and talk about it. Assign specific podcasts based on what the group needs and discuss them at the next meeting.
This is where the members of the group act as your sales team and actively look for opportunities to refer business to you outside of the group itself. External referrals help you grow your business as they are not limited to the membership of your group and their needs.
They say āpractice makes perfectā and you want to create a pitch perfectly designed to get you the types of dream referrals that will transform your business and your bank balance. Or as Andre Agassi said āif you donāt practice you donāt deserve to win.ā
A well planned 60- second pitch used at BNI can also be used in other networking environments and as your elevator pitch too. At your weekly meeting you are required to present a 60-second pitch. Similar to your commercial, again, Prepare, plan, practice, and do NOT be boring.

Hi everyone, I just interviewed for a small law firm, and after the interview was finished they asked me to complete an online IQ test and to send them the results.... This seems very strange as I have never heard of law firms asking for that before. Should I be concerned? I have a JD degree, not sure what the IQ test would prove.
Hey! So Iām currently a fifth year litigation associate at a big law firm. Long story short, Iām over it. Iām leaving. I want to start my own practice and shoot for the moon. I have a couple questions though that Iād love to hear your collective thoughts about.
Two months into starting the firm. After a slow January and a rough first half of February, I was definitely getting a bit gloomy.
What do you wish you had known on your first day as an attorney? Whatās that one thing you want to tell a new associate who is about to start his Big Law life?
Do you guys recommend this? What are the pros and cons? Iāve worked my last two years of law school and I have already been offered jobs but something is telling me to go on my own. Iām just not sure if Iām ready. Do I need some experience before I make that jump?
Hello- I am not talking big law but regional firms. Recently a partner from a firm tried to get me to join them. This is the second time this happened to me.
I just graduated from law school last year. I am interning in a law firm in the banking regulatory area at the moment and I love it, itās challenging intellectually, has a great work-life balance, I get a considerable amount of responsibility as a junior lawyer/trainee (sent a memo of my research to the client already), etc.
