The former convict Tanner Howard is played by the actor Ben Foster who portrays the deranged character in a spectacular way. Through the way in which Ben Foster plays the role of Tanner, the viewer is teleported into a world of uncertainty and violence where anything can happen at any moment.
The younger brother in the duo of mischiefs is played by the actor Chris Pine who manages to portray the character in a calm and collected manner despite the situations in which he finds himself. In comparison with Tanner who is unpredictable and violent, Toby is calm, collected and always has a plan.
Marcus is played in the film by the Academy Award Nominee and Winner, Jeff Bridges. The seasoned actor plays the part of the Ranger in the film, a character who is close to retiring from his job. The actor played in many other similar instances and so his portrayal of the old Ranger is calculated.
Alberto Parker is played by the Indian actor Gil Birmingham, something that is also referenced in the film a few times. Alberto is Marcus’s partner and he is a much younger and yet less cautious than his partner. Gil’s portrayal presents Alberto as an impulsive man, ready to prove his worth and take care of those he loves.
Debbie is played in the film by the American actress Marin Ireland. Marine Ireland plays the role of Toby’s ex-wife. She appears in the stage when Toby and Marcus are having an argument on the porch of her house and she returns home with her children.

Parker is Hamilton's partner. They are a close team. Parker is a little in awe of his renowned partner. He seems to follow his lead rather than leading himself, but does not resent this at all. Parker is with Hamilton during all of their stake outs and this is why he goes with him when Tanner pulls them off-road in an attempt to ambush them. His death is almost random, because Tanner cannot see the Rangers from his vantage point; he is taking potshots with a sniper's rifle and Parker is hit more out of bad luck than good marksmanship.
Tanner is an ex-con who cannot seem to live life on the straight and narrow; however, his first crime was for good reason, as he shot and killed his abusive father when he could not stand his abuse anymore. Only after this did he take up armed crime. He is also not as smart as his brother; he can carry out a crime but cannot devise one that is likely to succeed. He is in awe of his brother a little because he is smarter, and better at planning things. He is also a loose cannon. The plans that Toby comes up with are excellent, well thought out and easily executed, yet Tanner constantly puts them in jeopardy with his wild and knee-jerk nature. This provides the main source of friction between the two brothers who otherwise get along well.
He and Albert Parker are on the case of a series of early morning bank robberies at the Texas Midland Bank. Hamilton is the kind of cop who solves crimes by analyzing the personalities of the perpetrators, and then trying to consider what their next moves might be. He detects a pattern in their crimewave and so stakes out another branch of the Texas Midland Bank hoping to outwit them and catch them in the act but when they don't appear he begins to plot a map of potential robbery targets almost as he would do if he was one of the robbers. Unfortunately he always seems to be one step behind; He and his partner are on the way to the next likely target when it is robbed, at least proving his hunch correct. He guessed correctly as to their next target.
