Gere's performance in Arbitrage is too good to ignore. At 62, he is at the peak of his powers. Watch him in the scene when Sarandon – in full, feisty flower – hits Robert with a lifetime of resentments. She can't rock his composure.Sep 13, 2012

As he approaches his 60th birthday, New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is the picture of success -- at least on the surface. In reality, Miller is in over his head, trying desperately to sell his empire to a big bank before the authorities and his family uncover the depth of his fraud. Unexpectedly, a critical error forces Miller to juggle family, business and crime with the aid of a former associate, but a detective's (Tim Roth) suspicions mean it may already be too late.Arbitrage / Film synopsis
Sure, we may be slightly biased—the film was inspired in part by the 2010 anthology The Great Hangover: 21 Tales of the New Recession from the Pages of Vanity Fair, and it features a cameo by V.F.'s editor, Graydon Carter—but you needn't look further than early reviews to see that it has been impartially well received.Jan 25, 2012
Filming began in April 2011 in New York City. It opened in U.S. theaters in September 2012.
The website's critics consensus reads: " Arbitrage is both a tense thriller and a penetrating character study, elevated by the strength of a typically assured performance from Richard Gere." New York City hedge fund magnate Robert Miller ( Richard Gere) manages a fund with his daughter Brooke ( Brit Marling) and is about to sell it for a handsome profit. He is having an affair with a much younger woman, gallery owner Julie Cote ( Laetitia Casta ), whom he has also helped financially. However, unbeknownst to Brooke and most of his other employees, Miller has cooked his company's books and borrowed $412 million from an associate in order to cover an investment loss and avoid being arrested for fraud.
As we watch investment magnate Robert Miller (played to perfection by Richard Gere) engage in law-bending machinations, we see that while he may be terrified of getting caught, this guy is still arrogant enough to appear calm and carry on.
His hubris drives him to make a reckless decision to placate his mistress, a young French art dealer played by Laetitia Casta (who recently appeared in War of the Buttons ), leading to a deadly car accident that Miller flees.
