The diocese's current bishop is Barry C. Knestout, who was appointed by Pope Francis on December 5, 2017. He was installed to the position on January 12, 2018. Prior to the American Revolution, few Catholics lived in colonial Virginia.

On October 15, 2020, it was revealed that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond had paid $6.3 million to settle 51 out of 68 claims of sexual abuse.
The two counties of the Eastern Shore region of Virginia became part of the new Diocese of Wilmington when Pope Pius IX erected that diocese, taking the Delmarva Peninsula (the entire state of Delaware and the Eastern Shore regions of Maryland and Virginia) from the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Diocese of Philadelphia and making it a suffragan of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Baltimore, on 3 March 1868.
(The same pope subsequently changed the title of the Diocese of Wheeling to Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston on 21 August 1974. )

Survivors abused by clergy members in Virginia have filed church abuse lawsuits against their abusers and the relevant dioceses. These lawsuits accuse the Catholic dioceses in Virginia of concealing allegations of sexual abuse. In doing so, the lawsuits claim the dioceses allowed predatory priests to continue abusing victims without suffering legal consequences.

In Virginia, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse must file a civil claim against a perpetrator before they reach age 38. However, survivors only have until they reach 20 years of age to file an abuse claim against a responsible institution.
Many Catholic dioceses in the United States have paid large clergy abuse settlements to survivors. The Dioceses of Arlington and Richmond are no exception.

Fairfax County Police were investigating. Duesterhaus denied the allegation. Per diocese, assigned in past to parishes in Falls Church, Annandale, Ashburn, Stafford, Fredericksburg, Lake Ridge, Woodridge, South Riding. Also worked outside diocese as military chaplain 1996-99, 2004-06, 2008-09, 2011-12. Per the diocese, it was informed 1/17/19 that criminal charges would not be pursued by the Stafford County Commonwealth Attorney, after other jurisdictions decided the same. Also, the Diocesan Review Board determined that “a credible allegation….had not been made… .” Duesterhaus was no longer on administrative leave and he was allowed to complete graduate studies.
