The towns and city referred to in the novel are vague and nameless in many cases but the booktrail covers Milo in Iowa and De Soto as there is a Milo in the book and the courthouse in De Soto was where Grisham himself worked as a lawyer although not a street one.
The book is written in six parts, rather than chapters. Each part is numbered with about 20 (+/-) scenes. At first glance, it seems that there is no one storyline in Rogue Lawyer, but rather a collection of short stories that talk about Sebastian's cases and what he has to deal with to get justice for his clients.

Sebastian defends people other lawyers wonât go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult, who is accused of molesting and murdering two little girls; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house. Why these clients? Because he believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even if he, Sebastian, has to cheat to secure one. He hates injustice, doesnât like insurance companies, banks, or big corporations; he distrusts all levels of government and laughs at the justice systemâs notions of ethical behavior.
John Grisham is an excellent novelist and also really adept at bringing legal shortcomings to light. This book is not worthy of him. It was a real disappointment from one of my favorite authors.
Because of his reputation, I kept reading, hoping for something interesting, but after finally finishing Gray Mountain, my first thought was, "Well, that was a little boring." and Rogue Lawyer is a little like a short story book. I have read every other John Grisham book several times, because they're that good. (less)

GRISHAM I'm opposed to the death penalty for a bunch of reasons. First of all, morally opposed because I don't think, you know, the state has a right to kill people. If killing is wrong, how can we sanction killing? If you look at the way it is applied, it is so unfair to -- it varies from state to state. It varies by race, by the race of the victim, but all these -- and the system is so broken, the criminal justice system, there are very few guarantees that protect -- you know, I'm on the board of the Innocence Project in New York. We're up to 350 DNA exonerations.
GRISHAM Well, first of all, thank you so much. "Sycamore Row," when "A Time To Kill" came out in '90, in '89 and again, as I said earlier, it was not picked up until the early 1990s, and the movie came out in 1996. The movie was very well-done. It was, you know, a popular film and all that. Over the years, when people can get close enough, they'll say something like, something always very nice, you know, just like you, just very nice people out there who enjoy the books.
JOHNNY This book, it touched our hearts here in Alabama because we are aware of several families who have a family member who was a maid and that was willed money, and the family protested. Man, you bring it on home. And there's one more book that we really loved, and my son's high school, they debated this book in their Debate Team Club, and that book was called "Gray Mountain."
We have a book club. We've got several of your books. I would like to segue back to a book that you did that became a movie that was "A Time To Kill." It seems like you a part two book called "Sycamore Row."
GRISHAM I mean, it was just -- I didn't plan to say -- I didn't wake up one day and say, okay, I'm tired of being a lawyer. I'm going to start writing books. It was a gradual move into another field that has been a whole lot more fun than practicing law .

The book was rejected by 28 publishers before Wynwood Press, an unknown publisher, agreed to give it a modest 5,000-copy printing. It was published in June 1989. The day after Grisham completed A Time to Kill, he began work on his second novel, The Firm .
Grisham said the big case came in 1984, but it was not his case. As he was hanging around the court, he overheard a 12-year-old girl telling the jury what had happened to her. Her story intrigued Grisham, and he began watching the trial. He saw how the members of the jury cried as she told them about having been raped and beaten. It was then, Grisham later wrote in The New York Times, that a story was born.
Grisham's writing career blossomed with the success of his second book, The Firm, and he gave up practicing law, except for returning briefly in 1996 to fight for the family of a railroad worker who was killed on the job. His official website states: "He was honoring a commitment made before he had retired from the law to become a full-time writer. Grisham successfully argued his clients' case, earning them a jury award of $683,500 â the biggest verdict of his career."
Grisham represented the seventh district, which included DeSoto County. By his second term in the Mississippi state legislature, he was the vice-chairman of the Apportionment and Elections Committee and a member of several other committees.
Grisham practiced law for about a decade and won election as a Democrat to the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1984 to 1990, at an annual salary of $8,000. Grisham represented the seventh district, which included DeSoto County.
