According to the BLS data, a U.S. lawyer making $180,000 per year would be in the top 25 percent, by income, of employed lawyers in the U.S. Whether being in the top 25% makes a lawyer "high class" is doubtful, but I suppose it depends on your definition of high class. My point, however, is that the $2M number being earned by the "average" equity partner at a top 20 big firm could be misleading to someone outside the profession who is trying to get a sense of what lawyers make. You don't have to be excellent, just opportunistic. And politically well-connected, it goes without saying. Suggest to your friends at the state capitol that they retain you for a juicy tort case on a contingency basis against an unpopular industry, and you and a few pals could make more than a billion dollars each.
Excellence as a lawyer doesn't translate directly to excellence at making money. Same as any occupation.
Generally in order to withdraw from your case, you have to have behaved in a manner that was poor to the extreme limit of the definition. Judges rarely allow withdrawal from a case by a defense team. Usually when they do it is based on the findings and evidence collected during a very private discussion that will certainly included you. It is one of the few sidebar conversation that will often exclude the opposition counsel.
