As Season 6 of “Homeland” gets under way, Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) is a changed a woman. Keeping her distance from CIA crony Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), she's taken up legal advocacy work for Muslim Americans, working at a stripped-down office in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Carrie discovers the identity of his source, a U.N. Russian translator who is outed and chooses to shoot herself just before capture. War is avoided. But Carrie essentially becomes the turned agent she's been suspected of being all season and flees a traitor with Russian GRU officer Yevgeny (Costa Ronin).
Plot. Set several months after her actions prevent a sarin attack in Berlin, Carrie Mathison is back in the United States, living in Brooklyn, New York with her young pre-school aged daughter. She works for a nonprofit organization providing aid to local U.S Muslims.
In Carrie's mind, she became a traitor to prevent a potential nuclear conflict. The show doesn't strive to convince us she's "right," just that she was motivated to do what she believed to be the right thing.

In Homeland Season 8, Episode 11, it is confirmed that Saul has a double agent at the heart of the Russian government. This was shown in a flashback sequence where a young Saul (Ben Savage) meets this agent in '80s Berlin.
Season 3. Fifty-eight days after the Langley bombing, Carrie has been reinstated to the CIA and answers questioning by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. During her testimony, she states that Brody had nothing to do with the attack.
In the waning minutes of Season 7, a physically and emotionally battered Carrie is returned to her CIA mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) as part of a prisoner exchange. Yes, she has a history of mental illness that has seen her institutionalized and forcibly medicated; yes, she suffers from a related lack of impulse control, and is a narcissist with a complete lack of sympathy for anyone who isn't herself.
The effect of that all happening was, Carrie was able to avert a war from happening, but the relationship with Saul was severed. In other words, let me be clear, Carrie really did betray Saul, really did betray her country, really did affect the death of a very important American asset in Moscow.

Carrie asks for Yevgeny's help in delivering the recorder to the embassy in Islamabad. Yevgeny is standoffish, as Carrie was lying to him. They kiss, but Yevgeny then sedates Carrie with a needle. He and his men take away Carrie along with the flight recorder.
