The wiretap, which was approved by the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, was renewed several times after it was first granted. Then, in another renewal application, Clinesmith’s supervisor asked him if Page was a source for the CIA, which could explain his connections with Russia.
The FBI agents who opened the investigation, including Joe Pientka, gave Trump his first intelligence briefing as presumptive Republican nominee. A memo with a summary of the briefing was approved by former agent Peter Strzok as well as Clinesmith.
The probe is being led by prosecutor John Durham, who was appointed to the task by Attorney General William Barr. Barr hinted at a development in the Durham probe in comments to Fox News on Thursday night.
The court specifically noted on Tuesday new information that should have cast doubt within the FBI about the accuracy of ex-British spy Christopher Steele ’s dossier on Donald Trump and Russia, which was cited in the Page warrant.
In a response included in the inspector general report, Wray described more than 40 steps the FBI was taking to address recommendations made by the Horowitz, including changes to make the processes for seeking FISA warrants “more stringent and less susceptible to mistake or inaccuracy.”.
The court said it plans to make another order related to the Page warrants public in the coming days. The FBI, inspector general Michael Horowitz found, had changed or withheld significant information used to build its application to surveil Page.
