lawyer who dressed up as husband to take the bar

by Zachery Boyer 3 min read

Laura Beth Salant lost her attorney's license 10 years ago after she dressed as a man and took the bar test under her husband's name. She was seven months' pregnant at the time and said her husband, whom she later divorced, threatened to kill her and their unborn child unless she impersonated him.Aug 12, 1999

Office Dress

This one is really up to personal taste and office culture. If you run your own office you can wear whatever the fuck you want, whenever the fuck you want.

Meetings

Once again, opinions fucking vary, but most folks can agree that meetings with clients and opposing counsel should be semi-dress affairs. Wear a tie, wear nice slacks, and wear a blazer to these. This would include depositions, client meetings, settlement negotiations, and other things of that ilk.

Court

Court is a special creature, because attorneys don’t actually get a whole hell of a lot of control over how they dress there. A courtroom is the private domain of the judge that sits on the bench above, and that motherfucker is going to decide how he wants people to be dressed when they appear before him.

Trial

There is no excuse for wearing anything other than a suit to trial. Period.

Keep Lawyer Fashion Current

Yes, suits are expensive. But it is also true that a classic suit can be worn for 30 years without showing its ancientness. Still, beware of shoulder-pad puffiness, lapel length, button placement and the presence or absence of pleats — all can potentially reveal the era in which the suit was purchased.

Keep Lawyer Fashion Up

Ode to the lawyer fashion and the polished attorney: May your shoes never be scuffed, your briefcase never bedraggled, and your cuffs always crisp. There’s no room here for sentimentality — always replace or refurbish visibly worn-out garments, shoes, or accessories.

Keep Lawyer Fashion Clean

It does no good to elevate your lawyer fashion with stylish, looking like-new clothing if it is besmirched with dog hair, latte stains, baby spit-up, or wafting foul odors. Better to wear out your clothing a bit prematurely due to scrupulous cleanings than to err on the side of grubbiness.

You file a complaint with the Grievance Committee. In cases like this one side always believes the other side is lying. I don't think a complaint will go anywhere.

What is a suit for a lawyer?

A suit is the hallmark of a lawyer’s wardrobe. An ideal suit would be a single-breasted one, with a notched lapel. Ideally, you have some cuffs at the bottom or you can go without a cuff, maybe you want pleats, maybe you just want an iron crease.

What to wear to a lawyer interview?

Keep it simple. If you wear a French cuff or double cuff shirt, go with simple cufflinks in gold or silver. Stay clear of precious stones, maybe semi precious stones, in multiple colors as well as enamel. It’s simply over the top. Apart from cufflinks, a wedding band is acceptable and maybe a signet ring or a pinkie ring if you wear it, or if you’re at an interview or you’re just starting out, it may be wise not to wear that and just keep it plain and simple.

What is the best material for a winter suit?

When it comes to patterns, solid colors and a plain weave are your friends. For a year-round suit, a worsted wool is great. If you want a winter suit, a flannel is ideal, and if you’re in a hotter climate, maybe opt for a fresco wool because it’s breathable. Apart from solids, a subtle stripe can also be acceptable.

What is the best suit color?

Suit Colors: Navy Blue & Charcoal Are Best. In terms of suit colors, you want to keep it professional, so navy blue and charcoal are your friends. Black is usually something worn at evening events, or for funerals, not at an office. Some will even argue navy or blue are better than grey because it connotates truth.

Do lawyers have to be shaved?

I think these days, you can find a lot of lawyers with a beard. So if you decide to go that route, make sure you have a clean well-groomed beard and own it, and wear it with confidence. No matter if you go with a beard or clean-shaven, wear it with confidence and it will make you look very professional like a proper lawyer.
