The average yearly tuition for 2013 was $23,879 for public schools and $41,985 for private schools, according to the American Bar Association (ABA). Most students finance their law school education through scholarships and government-backed student loans. The ABA found that the average student debt in 2014 was in excess of $127,000 for private school students and in excess of $88,000 for public school students. Many public and private law schools offer merit and need-based scholarships and grants as tuition discounts. On top of tuition costs, you must add the cost of books, room and board.
To become a lawyer in Florida takes 7 years of full-time study after high school. This includes 4 years of undergraduate study, followed by a 3-year law school and a written Bar exam.

The first step towards becoming a lawyer in any jurisdiction is to obtain pre-law education, or get your undergraduate degree. There are no undergraduate majors that are guaranteed to ensure your future success in law school or as an attorney. However, the ABA suggests certain undergraduate majors over others, such as English, history, political science, philosophy, business, or economics. When choosing your undergraduate institution, make sure that it is accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).

There are five primary steps to becoming a certified officer in Florida: Meet the minimum qualifications pursuant to s. 943.13, Florida Statutes. Complete the required training or be exempt pursuant to s. 943.131 (2), Florida Statutes for the respective discipline. Pass the State Officer Certification Examination for the respective discipline.
Be a citizen of the United States. Have earned a high school graduate or equivalent (GED). (A bachelor’s degree is required for correctional probation officers). Have not been convicted of any felony or of any misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement.
An individual must gain employment in a sworn position with a criminal justice employing agency. This can be in a full-time, part-time, or auxiliary capacity. Individuals who complete the Law Enforcement Auxiliary Basic Recruit Training Program may only be employed in an auxiliary capacity.
Contact a bonding agency. After successfully completing an education course, you must contact one of the bonding agencies that are approved to operate in Florida. Most of these companies provide “one-stop-shopping.” You make one payment to the company and they provide the application, pay the state fees, write your notary bond, and supply your notary seal. The bonding agencies provide the surety bond that is required for notaries public to obtain a commission. (Note that the bond is designed to protect the public against notarial misconduct or negligence, not the notary.) You can find a list of the approved bonding agencies. We recommend that you check with several companies to compare services and prices. The state fees of $39 are fixed by law, but the bond premium and the notary seal are competitively priced. Please note that the State does not give out applications or provide notary seals.
A first time applicant for a notary commission must submit proof that the applicant has, within one year prior to the application, completed at least three hours of interactive or classroom instruction.
If your application is approved, you will receive your commission certificate and notary seal from your bonding agency. Please confirm that the information on the seal and certificate are correct; if so, you may proceed to perform your duties as notary public.
