I love Nicholas Sparks, but it’s not enough to slap a dog on the cover of the book and label it a “dog book.” The book doesn’t have to be about dogs alone, but they must be front and center with the other characters, or at least critical to the story.
So, here are the site’s authors with dog themes in their mysteries. I will start out with the White House Pet Detectives: Tales of Crime and Mystery at the White House from a Pet’s Eye View. It is an anthology which was edited by Carole Nelson Douglas. In it, you will find stories by some of your favorite mystery authors.
Where the Red Fern Grows. This is probably the first book that ever made me cry. It’s a quick read, but every dog owner will be able to instantly understand the bond between a boy and his dogs. Call of the Wild. Of every single book on this list I think Call of the Wild is the best in terms of literary accomplishment.
And when a suspect in an interrogation told detectives to “just give me a lawyer dog,” the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that the suspect was, in fact, asking for a “lawyer dog,” and not invoking his constitutional right to counsel.

The FirmThe Firm is Grisham's second novel, and first of his works to become a bestseller. It inspired a movie adaptation starring Tom Cruise and is probably his best-known book.
He continued his policy of writing one legal thriller every year and threw in a couple of short stories and a baseball novel called "Calico Joe" for good measure. Grisham's 30th book was released in 2017, titled "Camino Island." Another intriguing crime novel, the story centers around stolen F.

The Judge's List: The phenomenal new novel from international bestseller John Grisham Hardcover – October 26, 2021.
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham's first work of nonfiction: a true crime story that will terrify anyone who believes in the presumption of innocence. “Both an American tragedy and [Grisham's] strongest legal thriller yet, all the more gripping because it happens to be true.”
Coming not from Grisham, but rather a Michael Connelly book, the movie is in many ways a throwback to the myriad adaptations of Grisham novels that appeared annually throughout the 1990s.

The punctuation, arguably critical to Demesme’s use of the sobriquet “dog,” was provided by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office in a brief, and then adopted by Louisiana Associate Supreme Court Justice Scott J. Crichton. Demesme subsequently made admissions to the crime, prosecutors said, and was charged with aggravated rape ...
And when a suspect in an interrogation told detectives to “just give me a lawyer dog,” the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that the suspect was, in fact, asking for a “lawyer dog,” and not invoking his constitutional right to counsel.
Crichton then concluded: “In my view, the defendant’s ambiguous and equivocal reference to a ‘lawyer dog’ does not constitute an invocation ...
I probably spent over 50 hours just putting this together in excel. I even created a specific algorithm for ranking books ( like I did in the past) based on a combination of reviews, ratings, sales, etc.
NR = Not Ranked (this could be a book that wasn’t previously on the Top 100 or a book that has moved out of the Top 100)
The Philosopher and the Wolf. It kind of breaks my heart to not have this book on this, because it’s my absolute favorite. Not enough people have heard of it unfortunately.
I’ve talked about my favorite books before, but never my favorite dog books. This is going to be tough, but I’ll give it a shot.
While I did my best not to miss any, I’m sure I did. It was quite the undertaking to compile such a list, but my plan is to update at least annually if not semi-annually.
