Atticus accepts the case out of personal integrity and a firm belief that the racist ways of the deep South will slowly but surely change over time. He sees this trial as an opportunity to help make that historic shift of attitude, even if it is just a small step.
Later, Scout overhears Atticus telling Jack that Tom Robinson is innocent but doomed, since it's inconceivable that an all-white jury would ever acquit him.
When Scout asks him why he takes Tom Robinson's case, Atticus responds by saying, “The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again,”(100).
Atticus took the case because he needed the money. Tom Robinson asked for Atticus's representation.
Though the trial targets Tom Robinson, in another sense it is Maycomb that is on trial, and while Atticus eventually loses the court case, he successfully reveals the injustice of a stratified society that confines Black people to the “colored balcony” and allows the word of a despicable, ignorant man like Bob Ewell to ...
He means that your own conscience must tell you what is right or wrong, and it does not matter how many others agree or disagree with you. As Atticus explains to Scout, this is why he is defending Tom Robinson, even though most of the town thinks he is wrong for doing it.
The factors that influenced his choice on taking on this case is, he believes Tom is innocent, Tom is a church friend of Calpurnia, and he believes that it is his duty. He expects them to lose the case, just because Tom is black.
The surprise of Tom Robinson being found guilty brings on numerous realizations to Scout such as learning that people won't always do what is right. It isn't until she notices her family's negative reaction that she truly realizes the trial was unjust.

The Verdict & Aftermath Long before the trial began, Atticus believed that Tom had no shot at winning the case because of the town's racial bias, but that didn't stop him from trying. Atticus's efforts proved Tom's innocence, but the jury still found him guilty.
Atticus gives his closing statement to the jury. He lists several reasons why the jury should put race aside and find Tom Robinson not guilty, such as the lack of evidence, the irrationality of racism, and appealing to the jurors' desire to be viewed as moral.
Even Atticus himself had said that the case was unwinnable. In Chapter Nine, he told Uncle Jack that the jury could not possibly be expected to take the word of Tom Robinson, a black man, over that of the Ewells, a white family. What does Jem think the verdict will be?
