Who is Hilda and why does she cause Maria Teresa to bury her diary? Hilda was a revolutionary fighting Trujillo. When Hilda is caught, Maria must bury her diary so the police wil not find it.
On the last entry MarĂa Teresa explains that she has to bury this diary, as Hilda has been caught and everyone in Don Horacio's group now has to destroy anything that would seem suspicious. MarĂa Teresa has mentioned Hilda, so she has to dispose of the diary too. She bids it farewell.

Another characteristic of Maria Teresa's narrative voice is the use of exclamations. After she kisses Berto, she exclaims, "Oh horror! Oh shamelessness! Oh disgust!" In July, when she eats two pieces of the cake Tia Flor cooked for her graduation party, she writes, "My hips, my hips!" This technique characterizes her as an emotional, dramatic woman. Even in a serious situation, such as when Minerva sobs before telling Maria Teresa that Manolo is cheating on her, Maria Teresa writes, "My brave Minerva!"
Now it is 1955, and Minerva is getting married in the rain. She moves in with Manolo, and by December 11 she is pregnant. By April 1956, Maria Teresa has started using her diary as an "all-purpose supply book." She is attempting to write a speech to give as Miss University, and Minerva is advising her how much and when to mention Trujillo. Minerva has given birth to Minou and is helping her younger sister write the speech.
On November 14, 1957, Maria Teresa writes in her diary that she is in love with Palomino, who is really Leandro Guzman Rodriquez; and, they are married on Valentine's day of the next year.
At the beginning of Chapter Seven (1953-1958), Maria Teresa is very depressed, writing "I feel like dying" because she has been mourning the death of her father. On December 31, she starts her entry with these words: "last day of this sad old year." She has Tio [Aunt] Fela read her coffee cup to learn if there is a man coming into her life as she wants someone to love. On March 1, 1954, Mate has a portentous dream about her father in his coffin: underneath his body is Manolo.
On September 7, Mate decides to finish her degree, but is disillusioned because of what has happened to Minerva. She dreams again of Papa, but this time there is man upon man on top of him.
Once she is at the university with her sister Minerva, she sees that all the street signs are named after the Trujello family. She and her sister must sign a pledge of loyalty to El Jefe; consequently, Mate hides her diary. On October 18, she has another dream about her father. But, her spirits lift when she is made Miss University, despite disappearances of people every week.
Late Reign and Death. In 1765 Maria Theresa’s husband, Francis Stephen, died. Upon his death, Maria Theresa appointed her eldest son, Joseph II, as emperor and co-regent. The two frequently clashed in their beliefs.
Maria Theresa also allowed Haugwitz to do away with yearly resource negotiations with the empire’s estates in favor of meeting to negotiate only once a decade. Over the course of that decade, the estates would pay the central government yearly taxes. Additionally, Maria Theresa reorganized several government functions, combining them in a centralized General Directory.
The increased revenue and cost savings of Maria Theresa and Haugwitz’s domestic reforms further served to strengthen the Habsburg Empire’s army. Although it was peacetime, Maria Theresa saw the need to prepare for an impending second war with Fredrick II, as he sought to defend Prussia against Austria’s newly formed alliance with its former enemy, France.
It was time for Maria Theresa, then 23 years old, to succeed to the Habsburg throne. Subjects of her crown lands — the Austrian duchies and Netherlands, and Bohemia and Hungary — were quick to accept Maria Theresa as their empress.
Over the course of her marriage, Maria Theresa would give birth to a sizable brood. Her 16 children consisted of 5 sons and 11 daughters, including the future queen of France, Marie Antoinette.

Maria Teresa is writing in a notebook smuggled in to her by Santiclo, Carmen 's cousin, who is one of the guards at La Victoria. She, Minerva, and the rest of the "woman politicals" are locked in a cell with sixteen "nonpoliticals," some of whom are serving time for dangerous crimes. Minerva and another revolutionary leader, Sina, hold classes and discussions in the southeast corner. One of the nonpolitical prisoners, Dinorah, has a terrible attitude about the "rich women." But Maria Teresa befriends one of the other women, Magdalena, who also has a little daughter.
The reader does not find out until the end of the chapter that Maria Teresa was taken to La 40 and whipped in front of Leandro, to try to convince him to do a job for Trujillo, though it is not described what the job is. It worked; Leandro cried out, "I'll do it! I'll do it!".
Even at her young age, Maria Teresa thinks they are very "special-minded," especially Berto, who brought them roses. On Three Kings Day, Minerva awkwardly mentions that they ought to celebrate Benefactor's Day at the cemetery. Maria Teresa does not understand what she means.
The diary ends with a rushed entry in which Maria Teresa explains that she must hand the book over to Minerva because it mentions Hilda. Hilda has been caught in the convent, and Minerva is burying everything that mentions her friend's name so as not to be implicated.
Because Maria Teresa's chapters are narrated in diary form, her voice is affected by her age at the time. In this chapter, she is eleven and twelve years old. Although she does not understand some of what is going on, the reader can gather information from her reports. For instance, on Three Kings Day, when Minerva mentions that they should celebrate Benefactor's Day in a cemetery, Maria Teresa says, "I guess I do have a reflection. Why should we celebrate Benefactor's Day in the cemetery? I asked Minerva, but she said it was just a bad joke, forget she said so." The reader understands Minerva's meaning even if Maria Teresa does not.
In lying for Minerva, Maria Teresa indirectly becomes involved in her older sister's revolutionary activities. It is the beginning of their downfall, and this is expressed in a simile of jumping into water together: "She took both my hands in hers as if we were getting ready to jump together into a deep spot in the lagoon of Ojo de Agua ... I pictured myself on a hot day falling, slowly and deeply, into those cold layers of water. I held on tight to my sister's hands, no longer afraid of anything but that she might let go." Maria Teresa gradually learns more and more about the revolutionary activities, including the reason for Hilda’s presence.
In February, she is summoned to the principal's office to vouch for Minerva, who has been sneaking out of school. Maria Theresa was as conservative in matters of state as in those of religion, but she implemented significant reforms to strengthen Austria's military and bureaucratic efficiency. She employed Friedrich Wilhelm von Haugwitz, who modernised the empire by creating a standing army of 108,000 men, paid for with 14 million gulden extracted from crown lands. The central government was responsible for funding the army, although Haugwitz instituted taxation of the nobility, who had never before had to pay taxes. Moreover, after Haugwitz was appointed the head of the new central administrative agency, dubbed the Directory, ( Directorium in publicis et cameralibus) in 1749, he initiated a radical centralization of state institutions down to the level of the District Office ( Kreisamt ). Thanks to this effort, by 1760 there was a class of government officials numbering around 10,000. However, Lombardy, the Austrian Netherlands and Hungary were almost completely untouched by this reform. In the case of Hungary, Maria Theresa was particularly mindful of her promise that she would respect the privileges in the kingdom, including the immunity of nobles from taxation.

Minerva is still heavily influenced by Castro’s revolution, and she seems to be idealizing even her own current prison experience.
