The show tells the story of Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies), whose husband Peter (Chris Noth) has been jailed following a very public sex and corruption scandal.

After reports of voter fraud surface, Landau reveals to Alicia that he rigged the voting machines in order to preserve the Democratic supermajority in the Illinois state legislature. However, in order to maintain the façade of a fair election, Landau forces Alicia to resign.
Alicia, Diane, Cary, Kalinda and others return to Lockhart & Gardner, now called Florrick, Agos & Lockhart. In Season 6, Alicia also starts running for State's Attorney and develops a friendship with prosecutor Finn Polmar. She is successfully elected but has to step down due to false accusations.
In Season 7 episode 18 "Unmanned", after having enough with office politics, Cary quits Lockhart, Agos and Lee. We see him again in the season finale working as a guest lecturer at an unnamed college.
After being let out of prison on house arrest, Peter immediately starts plotting his political comeback. He is re-elected State's Attorney, defeating Wendy Scott Carr.

The character was written off because Charles himself decided not to renew his contract after doing some soul-searching about his future. As sad as fans were to see Charles go, it didn't take away from the impact that his portrayal of Will Gardner had on the show.
Cary and Kalinda continue to have a flirtatious relationship and they frequently waver between comfortable camaraderie and a will-they-won't-they dynamic. However, in season 5 their relationship progresses as they have a sexual relationship. It ended after Cary's disagreement with Kalinda seeing other people.
Geneva Pine moves for a retrial, but Diane moves for an immediate dismissal. And Judge Cuesta agrees. He apologizes to Cary and dismisses the case. Cary is free to go!!
She eventually had to leave town to escape the wrath of Bishop and his team. Considering her well-documented disdain for politics, it was a little — ok, very — disconcerting to see Alicia abandon the firm she and Cary had built from the ground up to step into the spotlight and run for office.
Despite all those years together, all the scandals he weathered with his wife by his side, Alicia is done with Peter on The Good Wife . The Florrick divorce is on. After seven seasons of standing by her man, Alicia looks like she's ready to have a clean break from Peter.
The Last Call (Season 5, Episode 16) The aftermath of Will Gardner's death. After being gunned down by his client midtrial, Will's death becomes the before and after in Alicia's life. Despite having ended their brief love affair, Will and Alicia were magnets that kept gravitating to one another.
In the end, Peter didn't go to jail at all. The finale was a lot of negotiating between Alicia and Connor Fox and a lot of posturing about bullet evidence that Peter may or may not have buried related to a murder case involving a donor.
