People & Ideas: Charles Finney. Lawyer, theologian and college president, Charles Grandison Finney was also the most famous revivalist of the Second Great Awakening. He did not merely lead revivals; he actively marketed, promoted and packaged them.
When events eroded Finney's expectation of an early end to slavery, he revised his strategy and adopted a more militant stance against the slave power. His abolitionist career thus falls into two phases, the first lasting from about 1833 to 1839, and the second continuing through the Civil War.
He enjoyed great success, particularly in Upstate New York, a region that Finney called “the burned over district.” Finney's revivals emphasized human action, and he encouraged his converts to join various reform organizations, including avoiding alcohol and eventually opposing slavery.
He went on to preach in Philadelphia, Boston, and New York. Frustrated by the limits of Presbyterianism, Finney became a Congregationalist and served New York City's Broadway Tabernacle in the early 1830s.
Evangelist Charles Grandison Finney held a massive religious revival in Rochester, New York, lasting several months, from September 1830 to March 1831. People used the Canal to travel from as far away as 100 miles to hear him speak.
Finney's theological views, typically revivalist in their emphasis on common sense and humanity's innate ability to reform itself, were given expression in his Lectures on Revivals (1835) and Lectures on Systematic Theology (1847).

We cannot overlook Paul just because He was the most prolific of writers in the New Testament or that he planted churches throughout the Roman Empire because much of his of preaching was done in his letters to the churches.
He was one of the first preachers to preach progressively through each book of the Bible. He never preached topologically but his was expository; that is he exposited or preached from line to line giving a personal commentary for each verse. His writings made the Bible easy to understand, even to the uneducated.
