Dawson is also a Trekkie, who can speak a little Klingon.
Misty Knight is a police detective in Harlem who is trying to find out about Luke Cage. Her partner is Rafael Scarfe. She first appeared in comics in 1975 in Marvel Premiere #20. In the comics, she was given a bionic arm by Tony Stark and has powerful martial arts skills. The character has appeared with the X-Men and Iron Fist, with whom she had a relationship. She and her friend Colleen Wing set up a private detective agency. As Iron Fist is the next show in the Netflix lineup, she’s likely to appear there as well. Missick has appeared as Elise in the television film A Taste of Romance and as Porschla in the TV series Ray Donovan.
Coulter is playing the main character, who’s tagline, “Sweet Christmas,” was first heard during his stint on Jessica Jones. He was part of an experiment that granted him unbreakable skin. As we learned in the show, Cage was married to Reva Connors, who’s death Jessica was involved in, though he initially believed it to be an accident. He ran a bar called Luke’s in Hell’s Kitchen and became involved with Jessica, bonding over their shared superpowers. After being knocked out by Jessica’s gun, he ended up in the hospital, and then Jessica’s house, though he disappeared. He’s now fighting crime in Harlem in the new series.
Rafael Scarfe is the police partner and mentor to Misty Knight. In the show, they’re investigating Luke Cage. In the comics, he murdered criminals who got off without punishment. Whaley has appeared in films like Field of Dreams, as Robby Krieger in The Doors, Swimming with Sharks, JFK and as Brett in Pulp Fiction. He’s appeared in TV series like Gotham, The Black List, Ugly Betty, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
This section requires expansion. Henry Hunter was a kind man, well respected in the Harlem community. He treated his customers with respect and was friendly to everyone. He was even considered by Cottonmouth to be a good friend, as the latter killed Tone for killing him, and paid for the casket for Pop's funeral.
On the wall of the Shop, Pop had placed a list of people that would get a cut for free. Chico Diaz understood that Al Pacino would get a haircut for free, but not that Pop loved Riley so much. Pop quickly reminded Shameek about cursing after he mentioned an old teammate of Riley in a bad manner.
Luke Cage is a series in the great tradition of superhero stories. Unfortunately, that means that fans do a lot of shouting at their TV when he doesn’t do something he obviously should do. At the top of that list is that he squanders several opportunities to fight Cottonmouth when he has the chance.
Luke Cage the comic character was born from the era of blaxploitation movies. This was a time period that gave us such iconic characters as Shaft. You may wonder why a comic character based on a movie genre never got his own movie. This really doesn’t make sense, especially considering how long a film was in development!
Maybe the craziest moment was when he collected a debt from Doctor Doom.
Generally speaking, Luke Cage’s motivations are pretty clear. It’s part of why he’s a great hero. His heart is in the right place and he’s always willing to do the right thing. However, there are still times when his actions are downright confusing, especially towards the end of the first season.
One of the more interesting bits of connective tissue between Luke Cage and Jessica Jones is the character of Reva. She was Luke Cage’s wife and previously helped Kilgrave discover more about his powers, before he forced Jessica to end her. Before that, she was part of the experiments that gave Luke Cage his powers.
When the first season of Luke Cage started, it’s clear that Luke is a man on the run. Because of this, he has to work odd jobs that pay him under the table in order to stay off the radar of law enforcement. This all makes sense, until you remember his appearance in the first season of Jessica Jones.
One comic aspect of Luke Cage that MCU fans have only gotten an intense taste of is his partnership with Iron Fist. The two aren’t just occasional teammates, but genuine friends who watch each others’ backs in the comics. Luke likes to bust Iron Fist’s chops, though it sometimes gets pretty weird.
