Lou has no limp till the end of Season 2. It is explained in season 1 that he is shot in the leg by two men that had stolen a snow plow. This happened after the events of Season 2, and is the reason that Lou retired.

FXâs Fargo season twoâs second episode was an extended one at 90 minutes and much slower paced than the seasonâs premiere. But that doesnât mean it was any less engaging than the season opener as episode two, titled âBefore the Law,â simply took its time with each character now that the basics have been supplied in episode one.

Edâs worried about cleaning the car, the floors, and anything else that might be evidence of Ryeâs death (remember, they stored his body in the freezer) so he decides to skip work. Back at the Gerhardt house, no one has located Rye and Dodd needs him so they can stand against his mom.
Ed prepares it as they chitchat about Peggy and work. Then a coin rolls under a cabinet and Ed spots one of Ryeâs fingers on the floor. He blocks it from Louâs sight as the phone rings. Itâs Peggy, and Lou finally leaves while Edâs on the phone.
After clearing the room, Floyd sits Dodd down and tells him how things go in the upcoming weeks will decide the future of their family. Their empire is bigger than any son or daughter, and itâs not his time to run things. But, she promises after the crisis is over sheâll hand the operation over to him.
Peggyâs female boss tries to convince her she needs to go to that seminar while eyeing her rear end, but Peggyâs not sure anymore. And, somebody took a case of toilet paper. The KC goons pop into the typewriter shop which isnât really open, which is okay because theyâre not really customers.
Ed is chopping up Rye at the butcher shop, making ground round out of him. Louâs cruising the streets and spots Edâs truck and the lights on in the butcher shop. Lou approaches the shop where Ed is hard at work, Ryesâs arms still visible on the table. As he chops off Ryeâs fingers, Lou knocks on the door.
He first appeared as a supporting character in the first season (set in 2006â2007), played by Keith Carradine, and then as a main character in season two (set in 1979), played by Patrick Wilson .
When Ed reveals his upcoming rendezvous with Milligan to hand over the now-dead Dodd, State Police Captain Jeb Cheney hatches a dangerous scheme for Ed and Peggy to wear a wire for the meeting, hoping to implicate Milligan and the Kansas City mob.
Hanzee fires at them, causing the UFO to leave. Lou begins firing at Hanzee, but misses and he escapes. With the entire Gerhardt family and all of the South Dakota cops now dead except for a wounded Hank and Schmidt, Lou continues his pursuit of both the Blumquists and Hanzee.
Meanwhile, Lou spirits Ed out the rear entrance of the police station, but Ed eventually escapes with Hanzee in close pursuit as Lou is picked up by Hank.
After repeated attempts to call and make a deal with the Gerhardts for the safe return of Dodd in exchange for their own safety fall flat, Ed calls Milligan offering Dodd in exchange for protection from the Gerhardts, to which Milligan agrees. Ed informs him to meet at the Motor Motel the next day.
After Ed and Peggy agree to the plan in exchange for lesser criminal charges, the police set up an ambush at the motel meeting spot , only for Hanzee to observe their actions from a distance. Hanzee later uses this to betray the Gerhardts, informing them that Kansas City is holding Dodd captive.
