Margaret Qualley, who plays Alex, is the real-life daughter of Andie MacDowell, who plays Paula. This show marks the first time both appear together in a production.

Robinson made his first major film appearances in Jurassic World ; The Kings of Summer; and Everything, Everything.
Alex's mother Paula is an artist who lives with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Her flighty, forgetful personality means that Alex ends up taking care of her instead of the other way around. MacDowell, Qualley's real-life mother, got her start as a model in the 80s before winning roles in several films, including Sex, Lies, and Videotape ; St.
Alex's estranged father Hank is a born-again Christian and recovering alcoholic, who reconnects with his first daughter after she leaves Sean. Margaret Qualley as Alex, a young mother who leaves her emotionally abusive boyfriend, taking their two/three-year-old daughter Maddy and getting a job working as a maid.
On November 20, 2019, Netflix gave production a series order inspired by New York Times best-selling memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land.
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 94% approval rating with an average rating of 8.2/10, based on 48 critic reviews.
One of the best characters of Maid, Alex was a likable lead who was made of steel. Leaving an emotionally abusive relationship on nothing but a single car, a handle of cash, and a backpack is easier said than done, and Alex did it not once, but twice.
The initially cold and uptight Regina seemed awful, especially since she tried to stiff Alex out of pay after getting the job done, but her decency showed once Alex explained her situation, after stealing her dog with Danielle.
Alex's first friend at the domestic violence shelter, Danielle was a great friend and a gutsy lady who had left her abusive partner Kyle, and brought along her seven-year-old son to the center. Despite her own adversities, she did not hesitate to help Alex take care of Maddy, get dressed for court, and get her money from Regina by stealing her dog.
Played by Qualley's own mother Andie MacDowell, Paula was a complicated character who had so many layers, that it was hard to tell when she was being herself and when she was putting on a happy face. She had an undiagnosed bipolar disorder which made her dangerous to her own self, so that meant that she had led her life while she was unwell.
The kindly lady who ran the domestic violence shelter was gentle with the victims she helped â mainly because she had gone through the trauma of having an abusive partner herself. She had made it through a tumultuous and potentially dangerous situation, and then committed her life to assisting other young women like herself.
The cherubic Maddy was no older than 2 or 3, but there is credit to be given to a kid that young being exposed to traumatic situations but still walking around with a smile on her face. Maddy probably didn't understand what she was going through, but her instincts told her to run and hide when Sean got abusive.
Regina's friend and Alex's lawyer may have made a short and sweet appearance on Maid, but she was a powerful and strong woman who specialized in family court cases.

Itâs a popular notion that things change when we change them. Like many other women in the world of âMaid,â Alex Russell was subjected to emotional and physical abuse. The traumatic stress caused by such distress numbed their agility.
The male characters in Maid evidently radiated an addiction and a desire to control women. For example, Sean felt secure when Alex was with him, so he spent his days drinking and abusing his wife. When Alex left, Sean felt insecure and tried to gain her back and create circumstances so that Alex would return.
Concerned over not seeing Alex after she accepted the cleaning job, Regina visits Alex. But Sean answers the door, and he wonât allow Regina inside. He even lies and says that Alex doesnât want to see her. But as she leaves, Regina catches sight of Alex through the window.
Next, Alex enquires about gaining family housing and gets herself a second-hand car. It may stink, but it gets Alex from A-B. Alexâs family lawyer Tara (Mozhan Marnò) informs Alex that Sean cannot stop Alex from moving, a fact that Alex wants to tell Sean in person so that he can see that she isnât scared of him anymore.
