United States Attorney GeneralThe United States attorney general (AG) leads the United States Department of Justice, and is the chief lawyer of the federal government of the United States. The attorney general serves as the principal advisor to the president of the United States on all legal matters.
Lawsuits can be filed against a sitting president, and in some instances, can begin pre-trial before the end of a presidential term. Presidential immunity applies if the President can prove that a lawsuit interferes with their constitutional duties and obligation to the people of the United States.

The General Counsel is Jonathan Meyer. The Homeland Security Act defines the General Counsel as the chief legal officer of the Department. In this role, the General Counsel is ultimately responsible for all the Department's legal determinations and for overseeing all its attorneys.
In 1982, the Supreme Court held in Nixon v. Fitzgerald that the President enjoys absolute immunity from civil litigation for official acts undertaken while he or she is President.
All living former presidents and their spouses after Dwight D. Eisenhower are now entitled to receive lifetime Secret Service protection. Their children are entitled to protection "until they become 16 years of age".
Opinion. In a 5–4 decision, the Court ruled that the President is entitled to absolute immunity from legal liability for civil damages based on his official acts. The Court, however, emphasized that the President is not immune from criminal charges stemming from his official or unofficial acts while he is in office.
