Matthew Louis Gaetz II ( / ˈɡeɪts / GAYTS; born May 7, 1982) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Florida's 1st congressional district since 2017. A Republican, he became one of the foremost congressional allies of President Donald Trump .
Florida House of Representatives. Gaetz with Governor-elect Rick Scott in 2010. In March 2010, following Republican state representative Ray Sansom 's resignation on corruption charges in February 2010, Gaetz ran in the special election to succeed Sansom in the 4th district, which included southern Santa Rosa County and Okaloosa County.
He has also introduced legislation to loosen federal restrictions on the cultivation of cannabis for research purposes. Gaetz has criticized the federal government for having "lied to the American people for a generation" about cannabis's medical benefits. As a member of the Florida House, he sponsored a bill, eventually signed into law, to expand the state's Right to Try Act to include the medical use of cannabis. In September 2017, Gaetz keynoted the American Medical Marijuana Physicians Association 's annual conference.
In January 2017, Gaetz proposed legislation to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency, claiming that it hurts small businesses via the costs associated with compliance.
Gaetz initially defended his tweet, saying it was part of "witness testing, not witness tampering" and "I don' t threaten anybody." Asked to clarify, he said his "tweet speaks for itself". After sharp criticism from other members of Congress and an implicit rebuke by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Gaetz deleted the tweet and posted a tweet in which he apologized. Despite not being a member of the House Oversight Committee, Gaetz appeared at Cohen's hearing, saying that he wanted to observe and ask questions. During the hearing, U.S. Virgin Islands Delegate Stacey Plaskett, a member of the Oversight Committee, recommended that Gaetz be referred to both the House Ethics Committee and criminal prosecutors for witness intimidation and tampering. After the hearing, Gaetz reportedly texted an apology to Cohen, who thanked him for it. The Florida Bar opened an investigation into Gaetz for the tweet, as did the House Ethics Committee. In August 2019, the Florida Bar announced it had found no probable cause that Gaetz had violated its rules.
In November 2017, Gaetz introduced a congressional resolution calling for Robert Mueller to recuse himself as special counsel because of what were said to be conflicts of interest. He also asked for a special counsel investigation into the Federal Bureau of Investigation 's handling of the Hillary Clinton email controversy, undue interference by U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch in the investigation, and the Russian state corporation Rosatom 's acquisition of Uranium One during Mueller's time as FBI director. Gaetz said he did not trust Mueller to lead the investigation because of Mueller's alleged involvement in approval of the Uranium One deal and alleged close relationship with dismissed FBI director James Comey, a probable person of interest in a proposed new investigation.
During the tour, Gaetz and Greene repeated debunked claims of fraud in the 2020 election, attacked Big Tech and, at one event, claimed that the Second Amendment was for "maintaining, within the citizenry, the ability to maintain an armed rebellion against the government, if that becomes necessary.".

Ronald Dion DeSantis (born September 14, 1978) is an American politician and attorney serving as the 46th governor of Florida since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he represented Florida's 6th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018.
3973; 113th Congress), a bill that would direct the United States Department of Justice to report to Congress whenever any federal agency refrains from enforcing laws or regulations for any reason. In the report, the government would have to explain why it had decided not to enforce that law. DeSantis spoke in favor of the bill, arguing that "President Obama has not only failed to uphold several of our nation's laws, he has vowed to continue to do so in order to enact his unpopular agenda. ...The American people deserve to know exactly which laws the Obama administration is refusing to enforce and why." The bill did not become law.
When Twitter suspended DeSantis administration critic Rebekah Jones 's account for violating rules against spam and platform manipulation, DeSantis's office applauded the decision, calling it "long overdue".
In the wake of the alleged IRS targeting controversy, DeSantis called for IRS commissioner John Koskinen 's resignation for having "failed the American people by frustrating Congress's attempts to ascertain the truth." He co-sponsored a bill to impeach Koskinen for violating the public's trust. Citizens Against Government Waste, a conservative think tank, named DeSantis a "Taxpayer Superhero" in 2015.
In January 2019, DeSantis officially suspended Broward County sheriff Scott Israel for his response to the mass shootings at the Fort Lauderdale airport and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. DeSantis appointed Gregory Tony sheriff of Broward County. In 2020, Tony admitted to withholding a murder arrest from DeSantis during the vetting process. Although DeSantis had originally touted the appointment, he later distanced himself from Tony after Tony's past was brought to light. DeSantis's office had requested a background check on Tony just one day before DeSantis made the appointment.
He accused Obama of treating Cuba's Raul Castro and Iran's ayatollah Ali Khamenei better than Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu.
In January 2018, DeSantis announced his candidacy for governor of Florida to succeed term-limited Republican incumbent Rick Scott. Trump said in December 2017 that he would support DeSantis should he run for governor. During the Republican primary, DeSantis emphasized his support for Trump by running an ad in which DeSantis taught his children how to "build the wall" and say "Make America Great Again" and dressed one of his children in a red "Make America Great Again" jumper. Asked if he could name an issue where he disagreed with Trump, DeSantis did not identify one. On July 30, 2018, Jonathan Martin of The New York Times wrote that the support DeSantis's primary campaign had received demonstrated both Trump's king-making capacity in a Republican-trending state and a "broader nationalization of conservative politics" whereby "a willingness to hurl rhetorical lightning bolts at the left, the media and special counsel Robert S. Mueller can override local credentials, local endorsements and preparedness for a state-based job."
Summary: Attorneys need a sense of confidence to be good at their job, which for some outside perspectives comes off as arrogance.
However, arrogance can be a bad trait. It may mean that a law firm is not flexible on fees, is bad on communication, ignores members of the legal team and more.
Being arrogant doesn’t mean a law firm is all that bad. What general counsel may see as acting haughty is the same behavior that will advocate for their clients until there is nothing left. As BTI President Michael Rynowecer explains, “There are some clients who want a law firm that will do exactly what they say. These firms are all on the list because the really high-performing firms in client service tend to be opinionated, and when they have ideas on what their clients ought to do, they are often strong opinions.”
If you know a legislator who belongs on this list, please email us here. 1 Saira Blair, born 1996. West Virginia Legislature. Blair became a media sensation in November 2014, after the 18-year-old Republican won a seat in the West Virginia House of Delegates.
Appointed to a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives by county party leaders after her predecessor left to head the state Department of Natural Resources, Bourne was the youngest of the 10 candidates to apply.
The average age of a state legislator nationwide is 56, but that didn’t stop these folks from running for office. With differing political ideologies and representing a range of states, they share one uncommon characteristic: their youth. The youngest one was elected at 18, and even the oldest is only 23. When the seat in the state House of Representatives first became available, Sullivan, who had volunteered for political campaigns, initially urged somebody else to run. She now serves on four subcommittees, covering issues from agriculture and natural resources, to finance and tax, to civil justice.
Now a first-year law student at Washington University in St. Louis, she holds as her legislative role models U.S. Reps. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.), who was previously the youngest member of the Illinois legislature, and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who’s now the youngest member of Congress.
Her father, Craig Blair, is a Republican lawmaker, too, in the state Senate. But in some respects the daughter, who represents a rural district, is actually more conservative. He supports access to the morning-after pill, for example, while she opposes it.

The senior partner was horrified. “The judge is an honorable man, ” he said, “If you do that, I guarantee you’ll lose the case!” Eventually, the judge ruled in the young lawyers favor. “Aren’t you glad you didn’t send those cigars?” the senior partner asked. “Oh, I did send them,” the younger lawyer replied. “I just enclosed my opponents business card with them.”
An attorney was working late one night in his office when, suddenly, Satan appeared before him. The Devil made him an offer. “I will make it so you win every case that you try for the rest of your life. Your clients will worship you, your colleagues will be in awe, and you will make enormous amounts of money. But, in return, you must give me your soul, your wife’s soul, the souls of your children, your parents, grandparents, and those of all the your friends.” The lawyer thought about it for a moment, then asked, “But what’s the catch?”
What’s the difference between a good lawyer and a bad lawyer? A bad lawyer might let a case drag on for several years. A good lawyer knows how to make it last even longer.
Still, even lawyers who like to make fun of themselves and their profession have some limits. The following 20 jokes might be good for a laugh at home or on the street, but don’t try telling them around the break room at the office!
What’s black and brown and looks good on a lawyer? A doberman pinscher.
You’ve heard that one, along with a million other lawyer jokes that people have sprung on you from the moment you first announced you were going to school to become a paralegal. Some of them probably even get told around the law office. Even lawyers like to laugh and there are a lot of aspects of legal practice that are ripe for a little deadpan humor.
