At O'Melveny & Myers, Avenatti worked with Dan Petrocelli, the attorney who represented the family that sued OJ Simpson for murder. Simpson was found not guilty in 1995. OJ Simpson, a former pro football star, was in prison from 2008-2017 for a botched robbery. Ethan Miller/AP.
But since then, Avenatti has suffered a number of legal setbacks — including a judge ruling against him and Stormy Daniels in their defamation lawsuit against Trump, being referred to the FBI on suspicion of submitting false statements to Congress, and being arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.
And in May, New York prosecutors further charged him with embezzling $300,000 from Daniels. Avenatti has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and is awaiting trial in both cases. On January 14, federal authorities in California said they had arrested Avenatti for violating the conditions of his pretrial release.

Michael Avenatti, who represented porn star Stormy Daniels in a lawsuit against President Trump, has been found guilty of attempted extortion. The lawyer was accused of seeking to extort up to $25m (£18.9m) from Nike. He had threatened to release information that might be harmful to the popular sports brand.
Nike immediately reported the matter to federal prosecutors. Avenatti was arrested shortly after announcing he would hold a news conference about a scandal surrounding the company.
At the time he approached Nike, Avenatti had been representing his then-client Gary Franklin, who ran a youth basketball league in Los Angeles. Court papers said Avenatti threatened to hold a press conference alleging Nike had made illicit payments to young basketball players in Los Angeles.
In May last year, Avenatti was charged with defrauding her of book proceeds, and faces trial in New York in April. He denies all the charges. He also faces another trial in Los Angeles in May on accusations he defrauded clients and others of millions of dollars.

The case revolved around allegations that Avenatti, 50, stole money from clients because he was having financial difficulties. According to the TV station, he is also accused of spending the money on himself.
Cohen confessed to paying Clifford $130,000 and was sentenced to three years in federal prison for various financial offenses, including paying women to stay quiet about their alleged affairs with Trump during the 2016 campaign. Trump ordered him to make the payments, he testified under oath.
The decision to dismiss the lawsuit, according to Paul S. Ryan, Common Cause’s vice president for policy and litigation, shows how the federal agency is “broken.”
Democrats acknowledged that Cohen’s involvement in the payment scheme had been thoroughly investigated, but they disagreed with the decision to dismiss the case. They cited a December recommendation from the agency’s Office of General Counsel, which recommended the commission find Trump and his campaign guilty of violating several election laws “knowingly and intentionally.”
The mistrial decision comes just over two months after Avenatti was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for allegedly attempting to extort Nike.
Daily News is reporting that a California judge ruled on Tuesday that evidence in Michael Avenatti’s embezzlement case had not been turned over, resulting in a mistrial.
