Altered Carbon is an American cyberpunk television series created by Laeta Kalogridis and based on the 2002 novel of the same title by English author Richard K. Morgan.
On November 7, 2018, Netflix announced a spin-off anime film serving to "expand the universe" of the series and new elements of the story mythology was in active development. Titled Altered Carbon: Resleeved, the feature uses character designs by manga artist Yasuo ĹŚtagaki, is written by Dai SatĹŤ and Tsukasa Kondo, directed by Takeru Nakajima and Yoshiyuki Okada, produced by Anima, and features an original music score by Keigo Hoashi Kinuyiki Takahashi from Monaca. The film was released on March 19, 2020.
Altered Carbon was renewed for a second season in July 2018.
Altered Carbon was renewed for a second season in July 2018. Anthony Mackie took over the lead role of Takeshi Kovacs, replacing the first season lead star Joel Kinnaman. Additionally, Alison Schapker joined the series as co-showrunner alongside Laeta Kalogridis.
The first season is based on Richard Morgan's 2002 novel Altered Carbon. While most of the major plot points in the book are retained, the adaptation featured several major changes for characters and organizations. In the novel, the Envoys are elite soldiers of the United Nations Protectorate based on Earth, quite the opposite of the freedom-fighting rebels of the show, originating from Harlan's World, where Kovacs was born.
Martha Higareda as Kristin Ortega (season 1; guest season 2), a smart and tough lieutenant in the Bay City Police Department who comes from a religious Mexican American family of cops.
Lela Loren as Danica Harlan (season 2), the governor of Harlan's World and the daughter of its founder, Konrad Harlan. Simone Missick as Trepp, a bounty hunter (season 2) Dina Shihabi as Dig 301 (season 2), an AI archaeologue who befriends Poe.
Morgan, takes place over 360 years in the future, in a world where technology has developed to allow for immortality. Consciousness can now be transferred into a piece of technology called a "stack," and then transferred into a new body. Focusing on a character named Takeshi Kovacs — played by Joel Kinnaman in season 1 and Anthony Mackie in season 2 — who is a reincarnated super soldier called on to solve a murder, the series uses this plot to explore many darker topics, like exploitation, class differences, and the concept of ownership.
In order to portray these tough topics with nuance and the correct perspective, Kalogridis made sure that key scenes — such as the battle between the naked clones of Reileen (Dichen Lachman) and Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda) in "Clash by Night"— were directed by women. In this case, Uta Briesewitz was behind the camera. She has worked on shows that explore similar themes like Jessica Jones, Orange is the New Black, and Westworld, the last of which has extremely similar themes of women fighting for control and ownership of their own body.
The present-day version of Takeshi is played by Joel Kinnaman (as seen above).
Laurens Bancroft is a Meth (short for Methuselah). They are a class of people who are so wealthy and powerful that they have effectively become immortal. The Bancroft family has lived for over 300 years thanks to their cloud storage backups of their consciousness and endless clones of their chosen sleeves.
Miriam is Laurens Bancroft's wife, and is also an "immortal" Meth. She was implicated in Laurens's murder because only she and her husband had access to the safe where his gun was kept, but she maintains her innocence.
Kristin Ortega is a lieutenant at the Bay City Police Department. She was originally assigned to Laurens Bancroft's murder case, and he became frustrated with her when she couldn't solve the crime.
Abboud is Kristin Ortega's partner at the Bay City Police Department. He watches over her with an almost fatherly instinct, and tries to keep her out of too much trouble.
Hiro Kanagawa plays Tanaka. Katie Yu/Netflix. Captain Tanaka is the head of the Bay City Police Department, and oversees Ortega and Abboud and tries to keep the peace between the Meths like Bancroft and the regular people of the city.
Quell is the leader of the Envoys — a rebel group of supersoldiers who were fighting against the rising inequality and powers that led to people like Bancroft becoming "immortal.". Bancroft gives Kovacs a rare artifact when they meet for the first time: Quell's personal notebook.
On “Altered Carbon,” a person’s body or sleeve is as interchangeable as any piece of wardrobe, which makes for some fun acting challenges when characters swap bodies. In a way though, it’s not unlike what actors are asked to do regularly. Roles are just like a succession of sleeves for actors, performance-wise.
The cast of Netflix’s sci-fi series “Altered Carbon” is vast and varied, populating a futuristic world literally from the ground the up all the way into the sky. It’s an accomplishment then that so many of the characters are distinct and memorable, and a lot of that credit goes to the casting. On “Altered Carbon,” a person’s body ...
Rei is eventually revealed as the true villain of "Altered Carbon," and we learn that she manipulated Bancroft into killing a young woman. Rei then blackmailed Bancroft into derailing proposed legislation, and he decided to kill himself before his scheduled backup kicked in, allowing him to literally forget the incident.
By the end of the first season, Bancroft is arrested for the murder of the young prostitute he killed while on Stallion. Miriam is also arrested for her attack on Lizzie Elliot and she's outed as Rei's accomplice in Bancroft's drugging.
Takeshi, or Tak, and Rei grew up in an abusive household. Their father murdered their mother and covered up the crime, and Tak killed their father in retaliation. Then the two children were then found by CTAC — the Colonial Tactical Assault Corp (Protectorate military soldiers).
Rei was hesitant to join the group (who were fighting against the ruling class). But she was committed to never leaving Tak's side again, and so the two trained with Quell and learned how to be super-soldier Envoys together.
Rei's betrayal of the Envoy rebellion was the first big step in her turn to becoming a Meth. She dedicated her life to becoming a wealthy influencer who could deploy minions and find her brother again.
Which means that when they entered a room with a client who wanted to get off on killing another person, they believed they would die but wake up in a new body.
In Altered Carbon Season 1, the super warrior known as “The Last Envoy” found himself resleeved in the body of actor Joel Kinnaman. However, as Altered Carbon Season 2 starts, that version of Takeshi Kovacs is nowhere to be found. Eventually, our hero is put in a new body. It appears that Netflix has replaced Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman ...
Joel Kinnaman plays Takeshi Kovacs throughout the bulk of Altered Carbon Season 1. The body belonged to a man named Elias Ryker, a police officer who was romantically involved with Detective Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda) before Kovacs meets and eventually hooks up with her.
Altered Carbon takes place in a future where all of humanity has downloaded their consciousness onto discs called cortical stacks. These are then implanted at the base of the skull, giving people the opportunity to change bodies or even download their consciousness into a clone of themselves.
Lizzie Elliot is the daughter of Vernon Elliot and Ava Elliot. Her Cortical Stack was damaged, resulting in Vernon keeping her in a virtual-reality environment to keep her alive.
Takeshi Kovacs first discovers Lizzie in VR while searching her father, Vernon's residence, where the latter is keeping her stack in virtual reality. While Vernon convinces himself this is what's best for his daughter, she's actually trapped in a trauma loop after she was driven mad and subsequently murdered. As part of Takeshi's agreement with Vernon, Lizzie is brought to The Raven Hotel for protection and rehabilitation, where the hotel's AI caretaker Poe helps Lizzie get her confidence back through extensive virtual therapy and combat training. During this time, both Vernon and later Ava grow unnerved with Poe's unorthodox methods. Nevertheless, Lizzie slowly begins to regain her sanity and is warmly reunited with her parents. When Reileen Kawahara 's men, led by the pious Mister Leung, attack The Raven and abduct Ava, Poe uploads Lizzie's consciousness to Head In The Clouds before he is destroyed, with Lizzie thanking him for his help. After taking control of a synthetic body, killing a curious guard and murdering a patron, Lizzie rescues her parents and holds her own against several of Reileen's henchmen, including Leung himself. Lizzie and her family manage to escape Head In The Clouds before it crashes into the bay. Some time after, Lizzie finally confronts Miriam for her treachery, resulting in Miriam getting arrested alongside her husband. Lizzie then returns to a normal life with her family, but keeps her new synthetic body.

The series starts over 360 years in the future, with most episodes of the first season set in the year 2384 in a futuristic metropolis known as Bay City. In the future, a person's memories and consciousness (termed digital human freight, or DHF) are recorded onto a disk-shaped device called a cortical stack, which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck. These storage devices are of alien design and have been reverse-engineered and mass-produced but can only …
