Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, is secretly a serial killer, arising from a traumatic incident connected to the death of his mother when he was three years old. His adoptive father, Detective Harry Morgan, saw these homicidal tendencies in Dexter as he grew up, and took him on hunting trips to sate his desires to kill. When Dexter admits to having desires to kill people, his adoptive father influences him to follow a "code": only kill murderers who have escaped prosecution of the law. Since Harry's death, Dexter has killed multiple people, all the while adhering to the code. As his father has taught him, he covers his tracks by taking the victim to a prepared room lined with plastic sheeting in order to easily dispose of the evidence at sea. He only keeps a blood sample of the victim on a glass slide, stored in a box hidden in his apartment. Neither his adoptive sister Debra Morgan nor those in the department know about his secret killings, although Sgt. James Doakes is suspicious of how interested Dexter is in reviewing crime scenes. Rita and Dexter then went to a marriage counselor, who sorted out their problems. However, another problem arose when their neighbor, Elliot Larson, began to fall for Rita. On Thanksgiving Day, Elliot kissed Rita and pointed out that Dexter was never home. Although Rita initially kissed him back, she quickly ended it before it went further. Rita revealed the kiss to Dexter, but it concerned her that he didn't seem to care that she nearly cheated on him. Soon after, Rita was pleased when she observed Dexter punching Elliot over it.

The character of Rita has been well received by critics, who praised Benz's portrayal. Eric Goldman of IGN has said, "Dexter does a solid job of developing the roles of the supporting cast, with Rita, Deb, Doakes and LaGuerta all getting a good amount of development". He added, "There were a couple of forced moments in "Popping Cherry", most notably the drug dealer who came to Rita's house, in broad daylight, demanding money for her ex-husband's debts; it was all a bit over the top and cliché. On the other hand, it was interesting to note Dexter's inaction in that scene, making one wonder if perhaps he fears that any public display of physical defense, even for Rita, might result in him going too far and revealing what he is." Jarett Wieselman of the New York Post has said, "Rita always felt like the light in that dark show", and "In the beginning Rita was the vessel through which the audience could love Dexter." UGO.com placed Rita Bennett 7th on a list of "Top 11 Girlfriends on TV". Zap2it created a poll entitled "Best Mom" as part of their "Greatest TV Characters" series of polls; Rita was voted 12th on a list of 14 characters.

Gail has extremely high standards, making her judgmental of her daughter and her grandchildren, presumably because she used to be a schoolteacher. He typically wears dress pants, an expensive button-up shirt (usually with a tie ), and dress shoes. Underneath, he wears a sleeveless white t-shirt. On occasion, he adds a suit jacket. While fishing with Dexter, he wore a polo shirt. His kill attire is a pitch-black outfit, complete with black leather gloves and boots.
Dexter flees the scene with the weapon, upset that he killed someone he hadn’t vetted. The next day, Dexter is called to his own crime scene to investigate the murder. The police assume that Freebo killed the man, who turns out to Oscar Prado, the younger brother of ADA Miguel Prado and Sheriff Lieutenant Ramon Prado.
Miguel had a penchant for keeping trophies. He tried to steal Billy Fleeter’s varsity ring (but was stopped by Dexter). Later, he took one of Ellen Wolf's two wedding rings and stored it in his cigar humidor.
Sylvia, Miguel’s wife, and Rita instantly hit it off and become fast friends. Meanwhile, Miguel and Dexter hang out in the study, getting to know each other. Dexter, curious, looks at the photos of the Prado family. Miguel tells him that his father was a drunk and a bastard, and he may have some of the same traits.
Uncertain; Prado stated that his urge to kill was caused by his abusive father; it was later revealed that it was actually Ramon Prado who pushed their father down a flight of stairs. Billy Fleeter was a killer who fit the code and Ellen Wolf was a political threat.
Miguel, a campaigner for justice, was notorious for his harsh enforcement of the law, which made him powerful, influential, and popular with the local police and citizens of Miami. He despised defense attorneys, whom he blamed when cold-blooded killers were set free.
