While artists on the mainland obtained their paints from pharmacists, Venice already had paint dealers. Virtuoso colour compositions and the splendour of colour dominate the style of Venetian paintings.
In contrast to Rome or Florence, Venice, a commercial city full of artists, was less affected by the church. People of different religions and origins came together here. In the architecture that is still largely present today, one can observe the Ottoman influences on the lagoon city.

Venice and Florence were powerful city states during the time of the Italian Renaissance. Venice was a port city which meant that all the exotic wonders of the world could be found there. This lead to experimentation with color that other European cities couldn't come anywhere near to emulating.

Brunelleschi's earliest extant sculptures are two small bronze statues of evangelists and saints (1399–1400) made for the altar of the Crucifix Chapel Pistoia Cathedral. This work was interrupted near both the beginning and end of 1400, when Brunelleschi was chosen to simultaneously serve two representative councils of the Florentine government for periods of about four months.
In this period (1402–1404), Brunelleschi visited Rome (possibly with his friend, the sculptor Donatello) to study its ancient ruins. Donatello, like Brunelleschi, was trained as a goldsmith, though he later worked in the studio of contemporarily well-known painter Ghiberti.
The head of the jury was Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici, who later became an important patron of Brunelleschi.
In cultural and political terms, the grant of the patent was part of Brunelleschi's attempt to operate as a creative and commercial individual outside the constraints of the guilds and their monopolies.
