Upon discovering the phone is missing, however, her grief and anger lead to a violent tantrum that is mistaken for a breakdown, and she is taken away to psych. She has finally returned by the second season and stopped pretending to be insane, revealing herself to be plain-speaking, blunt and low key, and later attempts to blackmail Bennett into getting her a new phone. Piper is assigned a bunk with Claudette, who treats her rudely at first, but eventually warms up to her. Piper is assigned to the Women's Advisory Council (WAC), despite not running and asking Healy not to put her on it. She works in the electrical shop at the prison and inadvertently takes a screwdriver from the tool crib and loses it. Her ambiguous sexuality is a source of amusement to her best friend Polly and of frustration to her fiancĂŠ Larry. She is initially considered non-threatening by most of the other inmates. Although she does her best to have empathy and be helpful to others, she is often accused of being profoundly self-obsessed, and she only comes to realize that this might be true after being sent to prison. She becomes enemies with Tiffany after she ridiculed her religious beliefs, and ended up beating her severely after a failed attempt on her life at the end of the first season, knocking out all of her teeth.

Galina "Red" Reznikov (played by Kate Mulgrew ) â Red is a Russian inmate who runs the prison's kitchen as the master chef and is the behind-the-scenes leader of the prison's white population. She gets her name from both her ginger hair and her Russian heritage. In her earlier life, she and her husband had migrated from Russia and ran a struggling restaurant in Queens, eventually getting involved with the Russian mafia bosses who frequented their establishment. Red angered the mob bosses by punching one of their wives in the chest (rupturing a breast implant) after being excluded by their group, but later impressed the same boss by offering sound advice that allowed her to swiftly climb the ranks of the organization. Red is feared and respected by most of the prisoners, and has a lot of influence with Healy. Out of all of the girls in her group, she is closest to Nicky, and loves her as if she were her own daughter. She is always accompanied by Norma and Gina, who cater to her needs and work with her in the kitchen. Red runs a smuggling business out of her kitchen, using a food company she helped the Russian mafia set up, but refuses to import drugs of any kind. She actively uses her resources to help some of the inmates overcome drug addictions, although they have only "two strikes" before she abandons them because "Russians don't play baseball." When Mendez begins to force her to use her connections to bring in drugs, she hatches a plan to have him removed from the prison.

Their relationship was a secret and it had to be as an inmate and officer relationship was forbidden. Both came off as strange characters. Doggett felt comfortable around Coates and was able to let her hair down and just be herself. But Coates was not the most stable person to be around.
Toxic is the only way to describe the relationship between Daya and Aleida. As a mother, Aleida was not going to win any Mother of the Year Awards anytime soon. As a daughter, Daya would not let her forget the mistakes that were made. Viewers got a good glimpse into their past in Season 7 and it all made sense why Daya treats Aleida the way she did.
What wasn't supposed to be, became. Alex and Piper set the standard for relationships on Orange Is The New Black with their classic back and forth, struggle for power, arguments, fights, breakups, and makeups. It was classic comedy but it was classic relationship material as well.
Nicky, like Vause, is incarcerated in part due to drug charges; heroin. She is also arrested for breaking and entering. Her sentence was originally five years, but she got sent to max when it was discovered she was stashing heroin. She only had a year or two left in the early seasons of the show, but due to the unknown addition due to her stay in max, it's unclear how much longer Nicky has behind bars. She was still incarcerated when the show ended in season seven.
Orange is the New Black may have ended its Netflix run after seven seasons, but the women of Litchfield will live in the minds of pop culture fans forever. The show may have most closely followed Piper Chapman on her fifteen month stay, but fans cared at least at much (and often more so) for the women incarcerated with her during her tenure.
Sophia, played by the exceptional Laverne Cox, was originally sentenced to five to six years in prison for credit card fraud. By the time Piper arrived at Litchfield, Sophia was long into her sentence. Sophia was one of the few prisoners fans got to see released on the show.
Red looked out for her girls but she was hardcore. Red was arrested for participating in organized crime, in part because her husband was inept. Her sentence was a long one, thirteen to fourteen years on the inside. Like Sophia, Red is pretty far into her sentence by the time Piper appears on the scene. She only had about two years left on her sentence in season three, however the riot at the end of season four changes everything for everyone. At the end of season seven, Red is still incarcerated.
Diaz is originally incarcerated, alongside her mother, for forty-four months on drug charges. Again, everything changes at the end of season four when the riot takes over Litchfield. After murdering a CO, Diaz is transferred to max where her life continues to spiral out of control.

Piper Chapman was a great leading character in Orange is the New Black despite the fact that she made many mistakes throughout the show. Sometimes, she was pretty annoying and thatâs why she isnât ranked closer to the top of this list. For the most part, we liked Piper, but there were certain things that we wished she had done differently.
Stella Carlin, played by Ruby Rose , is for sure the most annoying character from Orange is the New Black . Stella she tried to scam Piper Chapman out of money when she was about to get released from prison. All she had to do was tell Piper she needed help and Piper most likely wouldâve lent her the money!
Orange is the New Black is one of the best shows of this generation because it gives a fictitious peek into what life is like for female inmates in a minimum-security prison. It showcases how little respect the inmates receive from guards and gives us a look into what romances might be like between inmates who are locked up together.
It starred the likes of Laura Prepon, Taylor Schilling, Ruby Rose, Natasha Lyonne, and Uzo Aduba. Orange is the New Black ran for seven seasons, starting in 2013 and ending in 2019. Fans were disappointed to find out that the show wasnât going to get another season because they loved it so much!
Tiffany Doggett is an Orange is the New Black character who went through a lot of personal growth. When the show first started, she was obnoxious, racist, and super annoying. By the end of the show, we were able to see how much of a human being she really was and we were able to change our views and opinions of her as a person.
Dayanara Diaz pretty much lost her marbles when she shot a guard during the prison riot. The fact that she was the one to grab the gun and shoot the guard was pretty shocking for viewers of the show because we never really looked at her as being that type of character. She obviously completely lost her way⌠And her mind!
Lorna Morello was a very sweet character but she was a little crazy! She described a loving relationship with a man outside of prison to all of her friends in jail with her but in reality, the relationship did not actually exist. She was a stalker and she had an obsession with a man who simply did not feel the same way.
Sarah Karlan of BuzzFeed praised the character's "impossibly quick wit" and "perfectly deadpan delivery". Rebekah Allen of SheWired said Lyonne is "wonderful" in the role, and called Nichols one of the best characters on the series. MTV's Crystal Bell called Nichols a "fan-favorite" and "our beloved smart mouth" and expressed disappointment at the character's departure in the third season.
Natasha Lyonne had intended to audition for the part of Lorna Morello but, according to Lyonne, "they wouldnât let me [audition for Morello], because they already liked me for Nicky." Yael Stone, who had auditioned for the role of Nichols, was cast as Morello.
