Texas Officer on Homemade Clock Arrest. Larry Boyd, the Irving police chief, discussed the arrest of the Texas teenager who brought a homemade clock to school. A teacher thought it was “possibly the infrastructure for a bomb,” Boyd said. “That’s a very suspicious device.
Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old freshman at a high school in Irving, Tex., was detained by the police after he took a homemade alarm clock to school to show an engineering teacher.
Before mentioning that he would love to present his inventions to celebrity investors on the “Shark Tank” television show , Ahmed was asked if he had any message for other young gadget-builders. “Go for it,” he said. “Don’t let people change who you are.”.
NEW: Ahmed Mohamed says he made the clock to impress one of his teachers. NEW: The 14-year-old freshman says he is thinking about transferring to another high school. Police handcuffed him after he told them it was only a clock; then said there was no evidence the clock was dangerous.
Ahmed told his father he’d asked to phone him but the police told him he could not because he was under arrest, Mohamed said.
Chief Larry Boyd said Ahmed should have been “forthcoming” by going beyond the description that what he made was a clock. But Boyd said authorities determined that the teenager did not intend to alarm anyone and the device, which the chief called “a homemade experiment,” was innocuous.
If the lawyer refuses, get another one. If you must use a public defender, try to insist on one who will listen to your questions and return your phone calls. Public defenders are often underpaid and overworked, but many are dedicated and competent. Stay involved.
So, even if your lawyer feels it is possible to argue your case without doing so, demand that she call expert witnesses who can assess interviewing techniques or discuss human suggestibility or memory distortion. In addition, convictions are won by convincing juries that you are an evil and perverted person.
If you are innocent, you have nothing to be ashamed of. It is important to contact friends and family members early in the process. Tell them what happened. People tend to form opinions quickly and take sides. Do not give a statement to the police without a lawyer present.
The court may order the removal of your children or prohibit you from having contact with them. You and your lawyer have no power to stop this. However, you can protest their placement especially if the custodial adult assumes you are guilty. This is important . Someone who assumes your guilt may persuade your children of the same.
