His father, James Raniere, was a successful advertising executive who often travelled and was away from the home. His mother, Vera Oschypko, was a beautiful, graceful woman who was a professional ballroom dancer and dance instructor.
Raniere was to return to RPI for his Sophomore year on Sunday, August 27, 1978. The previous day, Saturday, August 26, 1978, was Raniere’s 18th birthday. For his birthday that year, he had a celebration for his mother, giving thanks to her for what she endured and for giving Raniere the opportunities he had.
The small family did not have much money or material possessions. When Raniere was about six years old, the family moved from Brooklyn to Suffern, New York, in Rockland County. About two years after moving, when Raniere was about eight years old, his parents separated and later divorced.
As further reflected in the Presentence Investigation Report (PSIR), the letter from the Headmaster further indicates that Raniere applied for early college admission and adds that Raniere was “probably as well prepared for college academically, socially and emotionally” as any of the high school seniors.”.

Camila said in gripping testimony at Rainere’s trial that she met him at age 13 in her native Mexico — and was a 15-year-old virgin when the then-45-year-old sicko raped her in 2015. Television actress Allison Mack — best known for playing a teenage friend of Superman in the CW network's "Smallville" — also is charged with helping Raniere in the scheme. She's free on $5 million bond.
The structure of NXIVM classes meant that students offered up personal details, which could later make them vulnerable to manipulation. Students earned different colored sashes as they ascended through the ranks and recruited new members. As NXIVM's leader, Raniere was called "Vanguard.".
Raniere pressured many of his female followers to follow near-starvation diets; some became so thin they stopped menstruating (he was attracted to very thin women). He punished women who didn't heed his orders to be monogamous with him and manipulated some by telling them that by disappointing him they had drained his energy.
Raniere was arrested in 2018 and tried in 2019 on federal charges that included racketeering, sex trafficking, extortion and forced labor. He was convicted and in 2020 was sentenced to 120 years in prison.
DOS, which supposedly stood for the Latin phrase "Dominus Obsequious Sororium," meaning "Lord/Master of the Obedient Female Companions, " was a subgroup created by NXIVM followers. It was also known as the sorority or The Vow. The group was supposed to be a sisterhood of "masters" and "slaves" that would somehow build feminist empowerment through subjugation. Raniere was the Master, or Grandmaster, of this group; Mack was one of his personal "slaves."
From its first location near Albany, New York, NXIVM grew to have educational centers in New York City, Vancouver and Mexico. Raniere designed NXIVM's classes, drawing in part from Ayn Rand's philosophies (she was a favorite author).
In 1996 , Raniere signed a consent order in New York. He agreed to pay a fine of $40,000 and accepted a permanent ban on participating in any " chain distribution scheme .". By 1997, Consumers' Buyline had closed. In the 1990s, Raniere was also involved with National Health Network, a multilevel organization selling vitamins.

Raniere’s attorney Jennifer Bonjean, who is handling his appeal, said in a Jan. 5 letter it would be “exceedingly burdensome” to travel to Arizona for meetings in the midst of a pandemic. But the judge refused to intervene on Raniere’s behalf. see also.

In a jailhouse interview that aired Friday on "Dateline NBC," Raniere apologized for the "tragedy" and "hurt" he caused victims — but also said that he's not guilty of any crimes.
It took jurors in Brooklyn just a few hours in June 2019 to convict Raniere. In running a purported self-help organization near Albany, New York, he created a secret sorority called DOS in which female "slaves" turned over compromising materials that were used to blackmail and force them into sex, prosecutors said.
NXIVM's president, Nancy Salzman, her daughter Lauren Salzman, bookkeeper Kathy Russell and Claire Bronfman, the Seagram liquor heiress, have all pleaded guilty to various charges. Bronfman was a key NXIVM benefactor and sentenced to 81 months behind bars.
