Nicholas Godejohn, 31, who is serving a life sentence at the Potosi Correctional Center for the 2015 murder of Dee Dee Blanchard, is now asking a judge to set aside the criminal case that ended with his murder con viction. The often-bizarre case and its aftermath drew global media attention.
According to the Missouri attorney general's office, post-conviction relief, or PCR, is a legal procedure that can take place after the normal appeals process ends. (On Oct. 1, a Missouri appeals court affirmed Godejohn's original court judgment and February 2019 sentencing, records show.)
Most often, the attorney general's office says, PCR is a proceeding where a defendant may challenge the actions of his or her lawyer during the trial and the appeals process.
At first, Blanchard and Godejohn tried to hide their relationship from Dee Dee, The Guardian reported in August 2017.
Oxygen reported that Blanchard actually stole the knife used to kill Dee Dee from Walmart and gave it to Godejohn. However, regardless of who supplied the weapon, Godejohn was found guilty of actually stabbing Blanchard’s mother, according to the Springfield News-Leader.
Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison in February 2019 at his trial, according to KOLR10 News. The Springfield News-Leader reported that he has no possibility for parole. Prosecutors didn’t pursue the death penalty, but he will probably never be a free man ever again.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News in January 2018, Godejohn said Blanchard “was basically the mastermind behind it all [and] I was basically a hired hit man in its own weird sense.” He added, “I loved Gypsy to the point where I would … do anything for her. I’ve proven that with what I did.
“Nicholas determined stabbing would be the best way to kill Dee Dee because she would bleed out faster and he just thought it would be just a quick easy death for her,’ Reporter Brea Douglas explained on “Killer Couples.”
One condition, she claimed, was that he had to kill DeeDee mom with a knife. Godejohn told the producers of “Killer Couples” that when he attacked Dee Dee.
