There is a silent war of few words but an overabundance of gestures and mimic going on between Astrid and her mother that Claire is completely unaware of in her naivety. Astrid continues to defend Claire, who is not aware of being emotionally poisoned and made to doubt herself as a person and foster mother.
You are not your own person because “they are in you”, which holds especially and literally true for toxic parents of course. Whether they destroy your childhood, burden you with the knowledge of a murder and making you an accomplice or whether they take your life – they and only they are always in the right.
Someone who grows up with a toxic, all-consuming parent, has no concept of self, of identity, of their preferences, desires and dislikes even. They were only ever mentally and emotionally raped into catering to the toxic parent’s every whim.
