The tendency to make disparaging comments seems to be linked to the personality trait of narcissism. Self-doubt is perfectly normal. Most of us are less than 100% confident all of the time. Even Brown University Philosopher David Christensen wonders if an ideally rational and intelligent person would be able to avoid self-doubt. Being uncertain, and trying anyway, is kind of what makes us human.
When you are faced with self-doubt, it can be difficult to remember that not everything someone else says about your capabilities or their facial expressions is a negative statement about you.

Even if you passed up the chance to do something because you were faced with self-doubt, you can be sure that you will have another chance. Life is definitely filled with second chances. Even the IRS lets you file an extension, after all.
In summary, here are some ways to support yourself in the face of gaslighting: 1 Firstly clarify to yourself how, when and who is gaslighting you. Think about what ways they make you feel unhinged and like youâre losing it. Write down whatever you can think of. You must be able to confirm that youâre being gaslighted before you can move on with your life. 2 Pay attention to the signs of being gaslighted, like feeling confused, belittled, âcrazyâ or manipulated. Take a deep breath, clear your mind, and center yourself. Set aside regular time for grounding each day through meditation or a mindfulness exercise. These techniques will help you to stay objective even in difficult circumstances. 3 Decide whether itâs worth continuing your friendship or relationship. If youâre in a working relationship, think about whether itâs worth staying in your job or not. If you want to stay, think about ways to minimize interaction with the gaslighter until you feel grounded and confident. 4 Talk to trusted friends or loved ones about your problem. Alternatively, seek help from a mentor or therapist who can help you do some shadow work. 5 Shift your perspective from being a victim to being a warrior/winner or whatever word feels the most empowering.
