Kathy Bates: Storefront Lawyer On 'Harry's Law' Oscar-winning actor Kathy Bates has taken her first leading role in a television series, NBC's Harry's Law. She plays a lawyer who, after a series of life-altering events, ends up running a law practice in a crime-ridden Cincinnati neighborhood.
After moving to New York City, Bates worked several odd jobs as well as minor stage roles while struggling to find work as an actress. At one point, she worked as a cashier at the Museum of Modern Art.
In 2011, she portrayed famed art collector Gertrude Stein in Woody Allen 's Midnight in Paris. In 2012, Bates made a guest appearance on Two and a Half Men as the ghost of Charlie Harper on the episode "Why We Gave Up Women", which aired on April 30, 2012.
In 2017, Bates starred in the Netflix television series Disjointed, in which she played the character of Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, an owner of a California medical marijuana dispensary. The show aired for two seasons.
Bates' performance in the 1990 horror film Misery, based on the book of the same name by Stephen King, marked her Hollywood breakthrough. The film was a commercial and critical success and her performance as Annie Wilkes was met with widespread critical adulation. Also that year, she had a role in Warren Beatty 's crime film Dick Tracy (1990).
NBC cancelled Harry's Law in the spring of '12, at the end of its second season, even though it was the network's most watched drama series — because its audience skewed older and Warner Bros owned the show, not NBCU. Everybody knows this story. Even so, the TV critic asked Bates to elaborate.

The ratings dwindled downward pretty quickly and the show ended the season with a 1.4 demo rating and 7.75 million. The series was on the bubble for cancellation but NBC brought it back for a second season. For season two, the show underwent some cast changes, no doubt in hopes of improving the ratings. It didn't work.
