Tasigna is part of a class of drugs called tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Tyrosine kinases are proteins that can stimulate cancer cells like leukemia to grow. Tasigna is designed to block a certain type of protein called Bcr-Abl. Inhibiting the protein stops the leukemia cells from growing.
Tasigna is a drug used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia by blocking proteins that make cancer cells grow. However, growing evidence points to a connection between the use of Tasigna and atherosclerosis, a dangerous disease in which plaque builds up inside arteries.
A possible side effect currently not on the United States warning label for Tasigna is atherosclerosis. The life-threatening disease is when plaque builds up in the arteries, causing it to harden and narrow the pathways. This limits the flow of blood throughout the body and can lead to a host of other diseases and even death.
The FDA approved the oral chemotherapy drug Tasigna in 2007 for the treatment of a type of bone marrow and blood cancer known as Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia. Tasigna is classified as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor drug, which works by blocking the BCR-ABL protein, which stops leukemia cells from growing.
The first Tasigna and wrongful death claim was filed by a California widow in 2016. According to the complaint, decedent Dainis Lauris switched from Gleevec to Tasigna in October 2013 and took the drug for over a year before developing “severe, accelerated, and irreversible” conditions related to atherosclerosis.

To date, patients have not received any jury verdicts or settlements related to Tasigna lawsuits. However, the U.S. Department of Justice ordered Novartis to pay $390 million to settle a civil fraud lawsuit accusing the company of paying illegal kickbacks to specialty pharmacies to promote Tasigna. Additionally, the company was accused of illegal marketing practices such as paid patient referrals and pharmacy rebates. “Novartis incentivized and pressured the pharmacies to emphasize benefits to patients, while understating the drug’s serious, potentially life-threatening side effects,” the Justice Department found.
Tasigna carries a Black Box warning – the strongest FDA warning placed on a drug – notifying patients that Tasigna has the propensity to elongate part of the heart’s rhythm. Patients with history of hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, long QT syndrome, or other heart issues should discuss with their doctors before taking the drug and undergo intensive monitoring if they decide on this course of therapy.

Taxotere (docetaxel) is a chemotherapy agent used in the treatment of various forms of cancer, including breast, lung, prostate, stomach, and head and neck. This medication is part of a family of drugs commonly referred to as taxanes – chemical compounds produced by the plants of the genus Taxus (yew trees).
Although temporary hair loss may be a possible side effect of chemotherapy or radiation therapy, complete and permanent alopecia is not. Hair should slowly regrow over the course of 6-12 months, but many patients treated with docetaxel found that their baldness was, indeed, irreversible.
Lawsuits allege that the permanent hair loss many patients suffered as a result of being treated with Taxotere caused them to experience a “disfiguring condition,” mental anguish and economic damages.
As of December 2017, there has not been a Taxotere recall relating to alopecia or permanent hair loss.
