According to Business Insider, research shows that your appearance strongly influences other peopleâs perception of your financial success, authority, trustworthiness, intelligence, and suitability for hire or promotion.
Dressing appropriately is essential to getting your clients and peers to view you as such. âYour appearance is your first impression and when people hire attorneys they expect them to look a certain way, especially if theyâre paying you a high retainer,â said Joleena Louis, a solo attorney practicing family law.
If you gain or lose weight, you should revisit your tailor to adjust your wardrobe. Clothing that fits well will always be more comfortable, which will make you feel more confident. You simply cannot perform your best when you lack confidence and people have a natural ability to tell when someone is not confident.
The main obstacles in womenâs progress to senior positions are still ârigid and inflexible structures â argues Denis-Smith. One of her solutions is an end to the âsalaried partnerâ position, where senior women often find themselves side-lined. A salaried partner is technically a non-equity partner â this means that although they earn the salary of a partner, they have no voting power and are therefore not adequately represented at the top.
These kinds of structural changes are not easy to implement and may require employers to make a concrete commitment to gender equality. Quotas are controversial but they do force employers to directly address imbalances and make strides in order to progress quickly. Denis-Smith is an advocate for quotas, arguing that self-regulation can only take us so far. The point has been made by several other high-profile lawyers and campaign groups, including the Fawcett Society. Its former chief executive, Sam Smethers, told The Guardian that âEquality wonât happen on its own. We have to make it happen.â
However, as a result of the pandemic, the EHRC suspended the enforcement of 2019/20âs gender pay gap reporting.
Despite the suspension, a number of law firms continued to share their gender pay gap reporting. In previous years, many firms have been criticised for excluding partners from their report on the basis that equity partners are not salaried employees and therefore not compulsory to report.
Change doesnât happen overnight. âThe first thing that surprised me about doing the project is just how slow the pace really was. The story of the first hundred years is really the story of the last 30 years because nothing much happened for about 60 yearsâ, Denis-Smith notes. âItâs funny because men in the 1920s were so worried about women coming into the legal profession and immediately taking over! But history teaches us that change is very gradual and you really have to build momentum.â
Female Supreme Court justices are more likely to be interrupted, with 65.9% of all interruptions on the court directed at the three female justices on the bench (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan). The same apparently applies to lawyers questioned in the present study with almost half of the female lawyers surveyed being interrupted in meetings, compared to only about a third of men. âWhite men donât realize how much âspaceâ belongs to them or that they unconsciously feel that they own space. They frequently interrupt others, but if a woman on a conference call states her thoughts, sheâs immediately criticized as interrupting,â described one female lawyer in the study.
Why do women do more of the office housework? Women are expected to be helpful and therefore tend to feel social pressure to volunteer for these tasks. Organizations are also more likely to assign women to these tasks, because women are more likely to agree to perform them.
2. List hiring qualifications. In order to eliminate bias in hiring, organizations should write down exactly what qualifications are expected for a particular job.
Not only are female lawyers mistaken for non-lawyers, but female lawyers end up stuck with more of the non-legal office housework. Office housework is made up of tasks like scheduling meetings, planning parties, and doing actual housework like cleaning up the food after a meeting. And the present study finds female lawyers are far more likely than their male counterparts to bear the brunt of this office housework.

The activities in a typical day in the life of a lawyer are largely shaped by the area of law in which the individual focuses their practice. Attorneys practicing personal injury law or workersâ compensation will spend more of their time in courtrooms or at administrative hearings than lawyers who concentrate in business law or real property.
For personal injury and workersâ compensation lawyers, what an attorney does each day can change a personâs life through a settlement or verdict that provides the money needed to allow the person to recover from an accident and injury.
On those days when an attorney is not heading out to court or to an appointment, the time in the office is spent seeing clients, preparing pleadings, reviewing correspondence that comes in, and attending to other matters that need to be completed as part of representing the firmâs clients. There are also other tasks that solo practitioners or partners in law firms must attend to that are related to the running of the practice. These tasks might include: 1 Marketing: Attracting new clients to a practice is essential to its existence. The internet has opened the door to a new array of marketing tools that attorneys must become familiar with in order to make the best use of them. 2 Personnel and staffing: Hiring and training attorneys and support staff take up a considerable amount of an attorneyâs time when it is necessary to add or replace someone. 3 Continuing education: Lawyers must take courses to stay current in their knowledge of the laws and thus remain in good standing with their state bar association. For instance, members of the Oregon State Bar must complete 45 hours of continuing legal education every three years to retain the right to practice in the state.
