10The scores are calculated using only information AVVO collects (typically publically available) and information attorneys provide, so they don't paint the entire picture. They do, however, offer an easy to understand rating from 1 (extreme caution) to 10 (superb), with 10 being the highest rating awarded.
To qualify for an “A” rating an attorney had to be reported as “Very High” in their legal ability and had been practicing for at least 10 years, a “B” rating meant an attorney was rated “High” and had to be practicing for at least 5 years, and a “C” rating meant that the attorney was rated “fair” with no limitations on how long they were practicing. A second rating was also given to go along with the “A - B - C” rating and that was a “V,” meaning that the attorney's peers stated they had "Very High" ethical standards. Over the years this transitioned to “AV”, “BV”, and “CV” ratings - with an “AV” rating meaning that the attorney had reached the highest of professional excellence and is recognized for the highest levels of skill and integrity.
For more than 130 years, Martindale-Hubbell has been evaluating attorneys for their strong legal ability and high ethical standards through a Peer Review Rating system. Prior to the 1887 edition of Martindale’s American Law Directory, which was the first publication to provide such ratings to attorneys, there was no way of truly knowing if the lawyer you were considering to do business with was trustworthy, ethical, or skilled in the legal field.
An AV rating indicates that lawyer has high ethical standards, exceptional legal ability, and significant experience. The rating eliminates the need for legal consumers to conduct extensive research before hiring an attorney. Hiring an attorney can be a complicated and nerve-racking experience.
Peer review is a process in which lawyers are reviewed by other lawyers and judges who have worked with that attorney. These professionals are knowledgeable about the lawyer’s overall quality of work and ethical reputation.
Attorneys are eligible for a peer review rating after they have practiced law for three years. Martindale-Hubbell usually initiates the process, but attorneys can request review and nominate peer references. A wide sample of reviewers is consulted, and reviews from within the attorney’s own organization are not allowed.
For a rating to be given, attorneys must be found to have high ethical standards. However, the lack of a rating does not indicate an attorney is unethical. Some attorneys have not been rated or have chosen not to participate in the rating process.
