On January 14, Cohen denied the existence of an affair on behalf of his client, Trump, but acknowledged that he had paid Daniels $130,000. He also said that the payment was out of his own money.
The investigation led Cohen to plead guilty on August 21, 2018, to eight counts including campaign finance violations, tax fraud, and bank fraud. Cohen said he violated campaign-finance laws at the direction of Trump and "for the principal purpose of influencing" the 2016 presidential election.
Ellis was hired by Trump in November 2019 as a senior legal adviser. From November 2020 to January 2021, Ellis was a member of what she characterized as an "elite strike force team" that made efforts to overturn Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.
