Photograph: Andrew J Whitaker/AP In the latest bizarre twist to a South Carolina murder case that has captured attention across the US, a lawyer from a prominent family who found his wife and son shot dead at their home in June was injured on Saturday when a bullet grazed his head as he changed a tire on a quiet rural road.
Murdaugh has been accused of swindling millions. The lawyer was arrested on Oct. 14 and charged with stealing millions of dollars from a settlement intended for the children of a housekeeper who died at the family’s home in 2018. The death was considered an accidental fall at the time.
He married Hallie, and then, on the strength of his reputation as "the man who shot Liberty Valance", became the new state's first governor. He then served as a U.S. Senator and United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom before returning to the Senate, and now there is talk of a vice presidential nomination.
While filming an exterior shot on a horse-drawn cart, Wayne almost lost control of the horses and knocked Strode away when he attempted to help. When the horses did stop, Wayne tried to pick a fight with the younger and fitter Strode. Ford called out, "Don't hit him, Woody, we need him."
At around 6pm on February 5, 1997, he was driving home in rush hour traffic along Eastbound Interstate 84 in Fishkill, New York, when he was sideswiped by another vehicle. The cars pulled over to the side of the road at approximately 1/5 mile from Exit 12, about two miles past the Newburgh-Beacon Toll Plaza. The two men got out of their cars and the driver of the other vehicle began yelling at Richard.#N#After the brief but heated argument, Richard asked to see the man's license. The man pulled out a gun and shot Richard once in the chest. The man then drove away, heading eastbound. Richard returned to his car, dialed 911, and described the accident, the shooting, and the perpetrator. He was taken to the hospital but passed away from his injuries about an hour later. His family was shocked at what happened. His wife Laura noted that they had moved from New York City to LaGrange because they thought it would be safer. When his friend John listened to the 911 tape, he could hear the pain and fear in Richard's voice.#N#Police set up a road block in an attempt to locate the killer or any witnesses. Several people did report seeing the argument, but nobody saw the accident or the actual shooting. Richard's killer has never been identified or apprehended.
He was 6'0" tall and very thin, with a bald or receding hairline, thin nose, glasses, and a beard. He was also dressed messy.
There has been some speculation that Richard's killer may be connected to someone in law enforcement. This information has not been confirmed. Extra Notes: This segment originally aired on the May 29, 1998 episode of Unsolved Mysteries along with another road rage incident, the death of Robert James.
Alex Murdaugh, a member of a powerful legal dynasty in South Carolina, was accused by his firm of misusing funds. A day later, Mr. Murdaugh reported that he had been shot on a rural road.
A day after he was forced out of his family’s law firm for misusing funds on Sept. 3, Mr. Murdaugh reported that he had been shot in the head. He soon admitted that he had actually asked a former client to kill him because he wanted to leave his son Buster with a $10 million insurance payout. Mr. Murdaugh survived.
Over the summer, Mr. Murdaugh offered a $100,000 reward for anyone who had information on the deaths of his wife and son.
Three days after their deaths, Mr. Murdaugh’s father, Randolph Murdaugh III, the last member of the family to serve as the region’s top prosecutor, died of natural causes.
A South Carolina mystery. The unraveling of the life of Alex Murdaugh, a prominent lawyer, is at the center of a sprawling saga of mysterious deaths — including the unsolved killing of his wife and son — and allegations of multimillion-dollar swindles. Here are five things to know about the case:
1. The “Murdaugh Murders” remain unsolved. The fatal shooting of Mr. Murdaugh’s wife Maggie and their 22-year-old son Paul rocked South Carolina’s Lowcountry region, where the Murdaugh family’s powerful legal dynasty originated. Few details have been released about the attack, and no arrests have been made.
Mr. Griffin added that police investigators were aware of the accusations against Mr. Murdaugh and of his departure from the law firm .
Alex Murdaugh found the bodies of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and their 22-year-old son Paul, outside their home on 7 June. Both had been shot several times.
The current elected prosecutor is not a family member, but stepped aside last month, citing developments in the case without giving any details.
The victim’s mother said she thought Paul Murdaugh could have been involved. Authorities have not released any information about why those cases were reopened.

Senator Ranse Stoddard and his wife Hallie arrive in Shinbone, a frontier town in an unnamed western state, to attend the funeral of Tom Doniphon. As they pay their respects, local newspaper editor Maxwell Scott asks Stoddard why a United States senator would make the long journey from Washington to attend the funeral of a local rancher. Stoddard's story flashes back 25 years. Upon entering the territory as a young attorney, Ranse is beaten and robbed by Liberty Valance and his gang. Tom Doniphon finds Ranse and takes him to Shinbone. Ranse's wounds are treated by Tom's girlfriend, Hallie, and others, who explain to him that Valance terrorizes the residents, and the town's Marshal Appleyard is powerless to stop him. Tom is the only man who stands up to Valance, stating that force is all Valance understands.
The conductor replies, "Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance.". Stoddard blows out the match for his unlit pipe, and stares downward.
