There are basically two kinds of mystery romance novels: romances with mystery subplots, and mysteries with romantic subplots. But whichever one you prefer, the BEST type of mystery romances are the ones where both elements are perfectly balanced to tell an incredible story. The following are just a few of my favorite mystery romances, ...
Just skirting the balance between proper mystery and historical romance, what I enjoy most about this fantastic book is the chemistry between the hero, Maximilian de Rohan (how’s that for a name!) and Lady Catherine Wodeway.
Charmed and Dangerous by Jane Ashford. A sweeping story of espionage set during the Napoleonic Wars that travels from remote Mediterranean islands to glittering ballrooms in Vienna. Anyone who’s a sucker for books set in Vienna [insert hand raise emoji here] will want to read this asap.
Each book focuses on a different spy working to save England from Napoleon á la The Scarlet Pimpernel.
The most popular mystery romance novel on Goodreads. An investigative reporter and a Special Forces Officer meet on the Greek island of Corfu. I haven’t read it, but I took a gander at a sample and it’s very fast-paced.
Barbara Michaels (also known as Elizabeth Peters) is a go-to author for mystery romance novels. Patriot’s Dream is one of my mom’s favorites, but if you want more recs check out my Best of Michaels/Peters/Mertz reading list.

Agents 86 and 99. The secret-agent spoof TV show, Get Smart, aired from 1965-1970, and starred the bumbling Agent 86 (Maxwell Smart), played by Don Adams. Agent 86 was typically saved by his ever-faithful and uber-stylish Agent 99, played by Barbara Feldon. Jim Rockford and Christine Dusseau.

Author Alex Segura has written five novels about the reporter turned private detective Pete Fernandez. In the first novel, Silent City , Pete Fernandez is dealing with a failing career, an ended engagement, and the sudden death of his father. So with his world falling apart all around him, Fernandez returns to his hometown of Miami. There, he is convinced to help a man investigate his missing daughter, leading Fernandez into a crime-ridden side of Miami and a life of private investigation that ends up being so different from the path he thought his life would take. The setting of Miami contributes greatly to the mood of these novels, and Segura’s flawed private detective is an intriguing character to follow.

There are dames a-plenty, and it’s a baffling, multi-layered murder mystery to boot. Written in 1930, and serialised in Black Mask magazine, it still seems a shame that Dashiell Hammett didn’t write more stories starring the archetypal PI he created. Perhaps his politics, and subsequent persecution, saw to that….
