In addition to that, the movie accurately portrays that cases can occur over multiple days, if not weeks or longer, in court, whereas many other films often convey the perception that cases are done and dusted within a few hours. However, the film does have some inaccuracies.
Although the real story occurred in the 1960s, the movie is set in contemporary times. The film also stars Laura Linney (who was paired with Gere in the 1996 thriller “Primal Fear”) and “Will & Grace's” Debra Messing.
Vail also admits (off the record) to the interviewer that he takes these cases because he thinks good people sometimes do bad things. This is why Vail takes such an emotional hit when Aaron reveals his true self to be the Roy character. He won the case but lost that sense of comfort that good people do bad things.

The movie is based on Stevenson’s 2014 New York Times best-selling memoir, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. ”. Stevenson, a Harvard graduate, ignored easier, high-paying jobs and instead chose to fight for people like McMillian, IndieWire reports.
McMillian was a man put on death row for the murder of a white woman after a day-and-a-half-long trial in 1987, according to the National Registry of Exonerations , even though there was overwhelming evidence of his innocence. One of the trailer’s scenes shows Stevenson meeting McMillian while he is behind bars.

In real life, Stevenson helped fight for McMillian, and his conviction was overturned by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 1993, according to a 1993 New York Times report. “Some films have the depth, grace, and emotional power to feel like classics from the very first viewing.
Bright recalls his young charge returning from a prison visit in an excited state. “This man is innocent,” Stevenson said. “I know he is innocent.”.
The acclaimed film portrays Bryan Stevenson’s successful battle to prove a death row convict’s innocence – a case that launched his life’s work of confronting America’s racism.
His epic six-year struggle to prove McMillian an innocent man provides the narrative arc of Just Mercy. It is based on the 2014 memoir of the same name in which Stevenson, 60, relates how he came to find himself representing some of the most godforsaken prisoners in the country.
There were bomb threats and many disappointments and legal setbacks along the way. But in 1993 McMillian was exonerated and walked free. As Stevenson writes in Just Mercy, “there is light within this darkness”.
The main irony was that the murder happened in Monroeville, home town to Harper Lee, which just went to show how much Alabama had taken to heart the moral of To Kill A Mockingbird. Even before he got going on the case, the trial judge – aptly named Robert E Lee Key – tried to talk Stevenson out of it.
