Haley said the U.S. military could be deployed in response to any further North Korean missile tests or usage of nuclear missiles and that she believed Kim Jong-un understood this due to pressure by both the U.S. and China. On May 14, 2017, after North Korea performed a ballistic missile test, Haley said Kim was "in a state of paranoia" after feeling pressure from the U.S. On June 2, 2017, after the U.N. Security Council approved a resolution adding fifteen North Koreans and four entities linked to North Korea's nuclear and missile programs to a sanctions blacklist, Haley said the council's vote was "sending a clear message to North Korea today: Stop firing ballistic missiles or face the consequences". On July 5, 2017, during a U.N. Security Council meeting, in response to North Korea launching an intercontinental ballistic missile, Haley announced the US would within days "bring before the Security Council a resolution that raises the international response in a way that is proportionate to North Korea's new escalation". The following month the U.N. Security Council unanimously approved sanctions on North Korea banning exports worth over $1 billion. Haley said that the sanctions package was "the single largest ... ever leveled against the North Korean regime".

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, a longtime mentor and family friend to Rice, urged Clinton to appoint Rice as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in 1997. At a confirmation hearing chaired by Senator John Ashcroft, Rice, who attended the hearing along with her infant son whom she was then nursing, made a great impression on senators from both parties and "sailed through the confirmation process."
A former Brookings Institution fellow, Rice served as a foreign policy advisor to Democratic presidential nominees Michael Dukakis, John Kerry, and Barack Obama. After Obama won the 2008 presidential election, Rice was nominated as Ambassador to the United Nations.
Rice served in the Clinton administration in various capacities: at the National Security Council (NSC) from 1993 to 1997 (as director for international organizations and peacekeeping from 1993 to 1995, and as special assistant to the president and senior director for African affairs from 1995 to 1997); and as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 1997 to 2001. Rice's tenure saw significant changes in U.S.-Africa policy, including the passage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, support for democratic transitions in South Africa and Nigeria, and an increased U.S. focus on fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Appointed at age 32, Rice was at the time the youngest person to have served as a regional assistant secretary of state.
Rice attended New College, Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, where she earned Master of Philosophy (1988) and Doctor of Philosophy (1990) degrees, both in International Relations. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled Commonwealth Initiative in Zimbabwe, 1979–1980: Implications for International Peacekeeping.

seat in the Security Council, a central criteria would be, ‘Is this person a quick study?’ There are three types of ambassadors, generally speaking: the ‘postal service,’ which is ‘I take the views of my capital and just pass them along and express them’; then there is the ambassador who has independence to develop their own views; and third, the ambassador who can do that and has the political capital in their own country to reverse national policy . In other words, an ambassador who can go to their own capital and say, ‘Hey look, we have to abandon our position in favor of a new position, which is the right position. And so, we are going to reverse course.’ If that can be achieved, an ambassador is an effective ambassador.

You could become a clerk, in which case you would usually work at the Court for two to four years in a P-2 or P-3 position. Well-paid, but entry-level. Competition for these openings is extremely fierce and some schools have better relations with the ICJ than others. The other main option is becoming an Assistant Legal Officer in the Department of Legal Matters, which is part of the Registry. This position is usually a P-2 position as well.
Being a successful international lawyer means that you devote your time to constantly accomplishing new skills, researching various literature focused on international law, international relations, and diplomacy. Defining international law would be very challenging experience. If we define it as a set of different rules between the states and/or international organizations, where each rule defines, redefines and questions sovereignty of a state, then the international law doesn’t seem to be in such a demand, as most of the topics have been resolved.
