Claim

A Toronto lawyer demonstrating the safety of window panes in a skyscraper plunged through a window to his death.

Origin

It isn’t often we have occasion to employ the term “accidental self-defenestration” in an article, but that phrase certainly applies to the case of Garry Hoy, a 38-year-old lawyer with the Toronto law firm of Holden Day Wilson, who on 9 July 1993 plunged to his death from the 24th floor of the Toronto-Dominion Bank Tower building at TD Centre in front of several horrified witnesses:.

Death

Garry Hoy was a corporate and securities law specialist in Toronto. He had also completed an engineering degree before studying law. While giving a tour of the Toronto-Dominion Centre to a group of articling students, Hoy attempted to demonstrate the strength of the structure's window glass by slamming himself into a window.

In popular culture

Hoy's experience was featured in numerous television shows, including MythBusters and 1000 Ways to Die. It was also recreated on the television show Curious And Unusual Deaths on Discovery Investigation channel.
