Those political aspirations evaporated when prosecutors in California and New York charged Avenatti with fraud in March 2019. California prosecutors said he was enjoying a $200,000-a-month lifestyle while cheating clients out of millions of dollars and failing to pay hundreds of thousands to the Internal Revenue Service.
Avenatti, 50, was convicted last year of charges including attempted extortion and honest services fraud in connection with his representation of a Los Angeles youth basketball league organizer who was upset that Nike had ended its league sponsorship. U.S. District Judge Paul G. Gardephe called Avenatti's conduct "outrageous," saying he "hijacked ...
At the time he approached Nike, Avenatti had been representing his then-client Gary Franklin, who ran a youth basketball league in Los Angeles. Court papers said Avenatti threatened to hold a press conference alleging Nike had made illicit payments to young basketball players in Los Angeles.
Avenatti was arrested shortly after announcing he would hold a news conference about a scandal surrounding the company. "This was an old-fashioned shakedown," prosecutor Geoffrey Berman said at the time. The jury heard that Avenatti had been at least $11m in debt.

In May last year, Avenatti was charged with defrauding her of book proceeds, and faces trial in New York in April. He denies all the charges. He also faces another trial in Los Angeles in May on accusations he defrauded clients and others of millions of dollars.
He was found guilty by a jury after a three-week trial and could face up to 42 years in prison when sentenced in June.

Avenatti was charged by a grand jury in the Central District of California on a slew of financial crimes, including 10 counts of wire fraud related to the alleged embezzlement of his clients' money, 19 counts of tax fraud, four counts of bankruptcy fraud, and two counts of bank fraud.
But since then, Avenatti has suffered a number of legal setbacks — including a judge ruling against him and Stormy Daniels in their defamation lawsuit against Trump, being referred to the FBI on suspicion of submitting false statements to Congress, and being arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

After graduating law school, Avenatti worked at O'Melveny & Myers, a high-powered Los Angeles law firm. Over the course of his legal career, he has contributed to several high-profile cases involving Paris Hilton, Jim Carrey, and members of the rock band The Eagles.
