Mark Matthew O'Mara (born February 8, 1956) is an American criminal defense lawyer in Orlando, Florida, known for being the attorney for George Zimmerman.
In July 2005, Zimmerman was arrested after allegedly assaulting an undercover police officer who was attempting to arrest a friend of his at a bar. The charges were dropped after Zimmerman agreed to enter an alcohol education program.
Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin, 17, following a nighttime altercation between the two at his gated community in Sanford in February 2012. He was acquitted of second-degree murder in a closely watched trial that triggered a national debate over racial injustice, civil rights and gun violence.Dec 4, 2019
Most recently, Zimmerman turned his attention to lawsuits. In 2019, he filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Trayvon Martin's parents. Just this month it was dismissed. In the interviews, Zimmerman says he took note of Martin because he was near a home that he had previously called police about. He also said "he was just walking casually, not like he was trying to get out of the rain" and he felt "something was off" about Martin.
