Vernon Jordan, the civil rights lawyer who built a career as a power broker in politics and business, has died at age 85. Jordan "passed away peacefully last evening surrounded by loved ones," his daughter, Vickee Jordan, said in a statement sent to NPR.
Vernon Jordan has died at 85. He's seen here in November of 1992, when he led then-President-elect Bill Clinton's transition team. Vernon Jordan has died at 85. He's seen here in November of 1992, when he led then-President-elect Bill Clinton's transition team.
As Jordan told NPR, his daughter initially told university administrators that she would rather have her father in the stands than on stage during her graduation.
His wife, Anne Landau, confirmed the death. Mr. Sullivan had established himself as a formidable lawyer when he was named United States attorney for the Northern District of Illinois in 1977.
Mr. Sullivan also played a role in disbanding the House Internal Security Committee (originally the House Un-American Activities Committee). For eight years, he represented Jeremiah Stamler, a doctor and scientist who had refused to testify to the committee about Communist Party activities in the Chicago area. Mr. Sullivan and Albert Jenner, one of the name partners of the firm, along with the Center for Constitutional Rights, sued the committee, arguing that its mandate was unconstitutional.
In 1973 the committee withdrew its subpoena of Dr. Stamler, and the lawsuit was dropped. Two years later, the committee, which had been in existence since 1938, was disbanded. “The case was the decisive factor in ending it,” Mr. Sullivan told The Chicago Tribune in 2019.
He soon left for the Loyola University Chicago School of Law, from which he graduated in 1952. He enlisted in the Army, serving two years stateside and in Korea as a clerk-typist. Not long after his discharge, he was hired by Johnston Thompson Raymond & Mayer (which later became Jenner & Block).
Mr. Valukas recalled him eviscerating a key witness in a bribery trial in 1974. “Over a day and a half,” Mr. Valukas said, “the witness would have agreed that he had started World War II. It was masterful.
In 2000, after declaring a moratorium on executions, Gov. George H. Ryan created a commission on capital punishment, appointing Mr. Sullivan as one of its chairmen. The panel made 85 recommendations two years later to reform the death penalty system. “The message from this report is clear,” Mr. Sullivan said.
He played a small role in what became known as the Chicago Seven trial in 1969, representing two lawyers cited for contempt and briefly jailed by Judge Julius Hoffman. “He was very proud of that moment,” Gerald Lefcourt, one of the lawyers, said in an interview.
JUNIPER HILLS, Calif. -- The death of a firefighter on the lines of a wildfire east of Los Angeles was under investigation Friday as another blaze to the north burned homes in a small community on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The death occurred Thursday in San Bernardino National Forest as crews battled the El Dorado Fire about 75 miles ...
The couple frantically tried to use bottled water to extinguish the flames and called 911. Authorities have not released the identities of the couple, who could face criminal charges and be held liable for the cost of fighting the fire.
A Cal Fire statement said it was the 26th death involving wildfires besieging the state.
Wyatt Stephenson helped his friend evacuate his home at the top of Juniper Hills.
Shortly after the fire began, San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson issued a statement saying he was aware of the community's concerns about how the fire started.
Cal Fire said earlier this month that the El Dorado Fire was ignited Sept. 5 when a couple, their young children and someone there to record video staged the baby gender reveal at El Dorado Ranch Park at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Atlanta police released video footage to the public of a suspected gunman caught on camera in the "targeted" killing of a woman in broad daylight on April 3, 2017.
Deputy Chief Darryl Tolleson of the Atlanta police said today the investigation is not over; he said the motive as well as the connection between Browning and the victim are unclear.
The Bradford Burns Unit was set up by Professor David Sharpe after he received many of the victims following the fire. As he received the injured at Bradford Royal Infirmary he was able to call upon 10% of the UK's population of plastic surgeons. It was during this treatment that Professor Sharpe began to create the Bradford Sling, which applies even pressure across sensitive areas. The sling is now used internationally in the treatment of burns.
Of the 56 people who died in the fire, 54 were Bradford supporters and two supported Lincoln. They included three who tried to escape through the toilets, 27 who were found by exit K and turnstiles 6 to 9 at the rear centre of the stand, and two elderly people who had died in their seats.
The 1984–85 season had been one of Bradford City's most successful seasons. Following a 1–0 defeat to Leyton Orient at the end of September, the side went 13 games undefeated, during which they went top of the Division Three table by defeating Millwall 3–1.
The Bradford City stadium fire occurred during an English League Third Division match between Bradford City and Lincoln City at the Valley Parade stadium on Saturday, 11 May 1985, killing 56 spectators and injuring at least 265. The stadium, long-established home to Bradford City Football Club, was known for its antiquated design and facilities, which included the wooden roof of the main stand. Previous warnings had also been given about a major build-up of litter in the cavity below the seats in the stand. The stand had been officially condemned and was due to be replaced with a steel structure after the season ended.
The disaster led to rigid new safety standards in UK stadiums , including the banning of new wooden grandstands. It was also a catalyst for the substantial redevelopment and modernisation of many British football grounds within the following thirty years. Bradford City continues to support the burns unit at the University of Bradford as its official charity.
Immediately after the fire, Sharpe planned and treated the injuries of over 200 individuals, with many experimental treatments being used. Mathew Wildman, aged 17 at the time of the fire, commented that "I must have had five different experiments carried out on me with all sorts of new techniques for skin grafts and I had potions injected into me that helped my face repair naturally over time."
In 2010, Susan Fletcher's son and survivor of the Bradford City fire (and witness to the Hillsborough disaster), Martin Fletcher, openly criticised the club's hierarchy at the time of the fire and the subsequent investigation.
