More than 200 people who were locked up in the Bay County Jail when Hurricane Michael hit have notified Sheriff Tommy Ford they plan to sue over allegations that unsanitary conditions and mismanagement led to serious health problems and the death of one inmate.
The sewage system failed, causing toilets to back up and overflow, leaving a mixture of standing water and sewage an inch deep in some places . The jail ignored a countywide boil water notice, the letter says, and forced inmates to drink contaminated water while telling them it was safe.
Ford, however, defended the jail’s handling of the storm and its aftermath, saying in an email to the Tallahassee Democrat that while there were uncomfortable days following the hurricane, all care, custody and control needs were met.
