"Absentia" was the first episode in the series to have more than 1 director listed. With the October 9, 2002 telecast of its 279th episode, "Shangri-La," Law & Order surpassed the original Hawaii Five-O as TV's longest-running crime drama in prime-time, breaking a record that stood for 22 years. The season finale episode "Aftershock" was the first and only episode of the entire Law & Order series not to feature a case and instead focus on the characters' private lives. Claire Kincaid is killed in a car accident, injuring Detective Lennie Briscoe. Prod.
But there is one death on "Law & Order" that went too far, both in terms of the crime scene and the character who was killed off. Alexandra Borgia, played by Annie Parisse, was the shortest-tenured assistant district attorney in the history of "Law & Order," although not by any choice her character makes.
Compared to the procedural shows that came after, the death tableaus of the original "Law & Order" were quite tasteful. "Bones," a show about identifying remains too decayed to recognize, has some of the grossest dead bodies on television. The original "CSI" was known for its sensationalistic approach to crimes.
When a man is murdered. Initially they suspect his landlord who's trying to get the man to move out of his rent controlled apartment. They eventually learn that the man is a basketball fanatic who's suing the star player of a rival team. And that he is constantly heckling the man.
When discussing the perils of high profile trials with celebrity defendants, DA Branch and ADA Borgia mention football players Rae Carruth and Ray Lewis. Rae Carruth was a professional football player who played for the Colorado Buffalos in college and in the NFL from 1997-1999 for the Carolina Panthers.

Set in New York City, where episodes were also filmed, the series ran for twenty seasons before it was cancelled on May 14, 2010, and aired its final episode ten days later on May 24. After its cancellation, AMC Network considered reviving Law & Order for a twenty-first season; however, in July 2010, Dick Wolf indicated that attempts had failed and he declared that the series had now "moved to the history books".

A sleazy criminal defense attorney is accused of killing his wife and using knowledge he obtained as a lawyer to frame a client. During the trial, he tries to further manipulate the system to avoid a conviction.
Ron Orbach, cousin of Jerry Orbach, makes his third and final appearance on the series as defense attorney Max Hellmann.
Green and Cassady investigate the death of a publishing agent who approved a book written by an ex-athlete that describes how he would have murdered his wife if he was in fact the real killer.
In the opening, the victim is referred to as Serena Darby of Darby Publishing. For the remainder of the episode it is repeatedly mentioned that she worked for Virgil Publishing.

Wachtler, Biscuits, and Books are arrested and charged with the murder of Jacob Dieter. It is further revealed that the no-show jobs scam at the newspaper was run exclusively by Biscuits and Books, who acted alone in killing Parenti. Tortomassi had no knowledge of the scam and is, indeed, innocent of Parenti's murder.
McCoy is shocked by the revelations regarding Tenofsky, whom he knew well, having worked numerous cases with him. McCoy regarded Tenofsky as a first-class attorney and a man passionate about his job and the law.
McCoy decides to further investigate this case and the tampered file. Southerlyn visits lawyer William Wachtler , who represented the two mobsters in the original case, Anthony Biscotti and Frederico Libretti, a.k.a. 'Biscuits' and 'Books' respectively, who are also present.
The judge agrees and McCoy instructs the police to re-investigate the murder of the journalist, Robert Parenti. Briscoe and Green interview Parenti's widow, Sharon. She reveals her husband’s journalist position was actually a no-show job, a scam organized by the mob.
"Nowhere Man" is also the title of a well-known Beatles song, written by John Lennon; Tenofsky's body is found only a few feet away from Strawberry Fields, a memorial to Lennon located in Central Park.
McCoy is skeptical, remarking that Tenofsky/Dieter "cared less about money than any man I know.". Franco Tortomassi is arrested by Briscoe and Green and charged with Parenti's murder. In a meeting with McCoy and Southerlyn, Tortomassi strongly asserts his innocence before departing.
Tortomassi had no knowledge of the scam and is, indeed, innocent of Parenti's murder. At a press conference New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, flanked by Branch, announces three dangerous mob criminals have been given "long prison sentences". McCoy and Southerlyn watch on from the room before departing.
Jesse L. Martin returned to his role of Detective Ed Green in the season premiere episode, he left at the end of last season to act in the movie Rent. Mid-season, Law & Order ' s future on NBC was in the air, unknown if the show would be renewed or canceled after this season. People also had issues with Dennis Farina coming in to replace Jerry Orbach in the previous season. Walon Green was show runner/executive producer this season with Nicholas Wootton, over Matthew Penn, and Peter Jankowski. Green stepped down as show runner/EP at the end of the season and Wootton took over in the 17th season .
Dick Wolf said in a statement that he respected Farina's decision and looked forward to working with him again. There were "a lot" of firings, including a portion of the camera crew. "None of the original writer-producers are there anymore," a source said to Fox News.
