He not only died between two sinners, he was numbered with them and died as they died–a criminal’s death on the Cross. Historically Christians have used two phrases to describe how Christ “became sin” for us.
A sinner could not pay for the sins of another sinner. The sacrifice must be made by One who was without spot or blemish–like the lambs slain on the night of the final plague in Egypt (Exodus 12). God ordained that the lambs must be one-year-old males, in good health, free from disease and physical defect.
What we see from the composite of these passages is that sinners were drawn to Jesus, that Jesus gladly spent time with sinners who were open to his teaching, that Jesus forgave repentant sinners, and that Jesus embraced sinners who believed in him.
When the death of Christ is merely mentioned as part of the final appeal in sermons, too much is being assumed. I am amazed at how many people hear, “Jesus died because of our sins,” and understand it to mean that he died to merely show us how bad our sins are.
Christian tradition holds that Gestas was on the cross to the left of Jesus and Dismas was on the cross to the right of Jesus. In Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend, the name of the impenitent thief is given as Gesmas. The impenitent thief is sometimes referred to as the "bad thief" in contrast to the good thief.
According to the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, respectively, both of the thieves mocked Jesus; Luke, however, relates: Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."
When Jesus was describing His purpose in Luke 19:10 (NKJV), he chose words filled with great wealth and victory for our lives. He said: “For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.” Note the choice of words, save that which was lost. What is that?
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!

Our recognition of God's sovereign initiative and rich mercy in saving undeserved sinners brings Him glory. Also, we should see that God desires His people to be workers of righteousness. Although we aren't saved by our works, we are saved in order that we will work for God. This is the point taught in Ephesians 2:10.
This teaching states that every person born into this world has inherited the guilt of Adam's sin. A. He took our Place — “For us”. When Christ died on the Cross, he took my place–and he took yours. This is the doctrine of substitution–that Christ died in the place of guilty sinners. Think of it this way.
He never confessed a fault because he had no faults to confess. He never asked for a pardon because he never needed one. He claimed that no one could convict him of sin (John 8:46) and he was right. To use an old term that is precisely accurate, Christ was and is a “moral miracle.”.

Let’s begin by considering the character of the One who was crucified. I. His Character: He had no sin. Paul begins with the fact that Christ “had no sin.”. The punishment for sin is death. The Bible says the holy God created earth and man perfectly. But Adam and Eve fell to the temptation of Satan and disobeyed God. Ever since Adam’s sin, sin has infected the human race. Each person is guilty: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” ( Romans 3:23 ).
And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise’" ( Luke 18:31-33 ). God sacrificed Jesus for sin. During the life of Jesus, crowds thronged around Him for healing and teaching, but the religious leaders scorned Him.
Even the love of money or hatred of enemies is sin, according to the Bible. Good works cannot make up for wrongs against the holy God. Compared to His holiness, “all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” ( Isaiah 64:6b ). Having sinned against God, we deserve His punishment.
Jesus is the promised offspring of the woman ( Genesis 3:15 ), born in human flesh to the virgin Mary. God witnessed that Jesus is His own Son ( Matthew 17:5 ). On seeing Jesus, the prophet John the Baptist cried, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”. ( John 1:29 ).

When seeking what we can learn from the thief on the cross, it should be remembered that at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion, two thieves were crucified beside Him ( Luke 23:33–43 ), and both began their time on the cross by mocking and blaspheming Him, as did many of the spectators.
