No, you can start wherever you like when reading Terry Pratchett’s books, because he intentionally wrote each one independent from the others. That’s not to say that his books weren’t interconnected, because they do feature the same characters in a series.
Except for the Tiffany Aching books, Terry Pratchett’s books are mainly adult fiction. Although children can read these books, many of those who loved the books back when they were preteens or teenagers find many more layers upon rereading the books when they were 10-15 years older.
He is best known for his Discworld series of 41 novels. Pratchett's first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971. The first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983, after which Pratchett wrote an average of two books a year.
In 2011 the award was won jointly by David Logan for Half Sick of Shadows and Michael Logan for Apocalypse Cow. In 2013 the award was won by Alexander Maskill for The Hive.
Pratchett died at his home on the morning of 12 March 2015 from Alzheimer's. The Telegraph reported an unidentified source as saying that despite his previous discussion of assisted suicide, his death had been natural. After Pratchett's death, his assistant, Rob Wilkins, wrote from the official Terry Pratchett Twitter account:
In August 2007, Pratchett was misdiagnosed as having had a minor stroke a few years before, which doctors believed had damaged the right side of his brain. In December 2007, he announced that he had been newly diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, which had been responsible for the "stroke".
He favoured games that are "intelligent and have some depth", citing Half-Life 2 (2004) and fan missions from Thief as examples.
The use of small capitals is a reference to how the character of Death speaks in Pratchett's works. Public figures who paid tribute include British Prime Minister David Cameron, comedian Ricky Gervais, and authors Ursula K. Le Guin, Terry Brooks, Margaret Atwood, George R. R. Martin, and Neil Gaiman.
The Long Mars was published in 2014. The fourth book in the series, The Long Utopia, was published in June 2015, and the fifth, The Long Cosmos, in June 2016. In 2012, the first volume of Pratchett's collected short fiction was published under the title A Blink of the Screen.
In 1983, he wrote his first Discworld novel The Colour Of Magic which was published by his friend Colin Smythe. This book did so well in the market that the BBC decided to broadcast a series on it in 1985. Pratchett quit working at CEGB and decided to become a fulltime author in 1987.
Surprisingly, his early ambitions were not in the literary world, he had dreams of becoming an astronomer as a child and even centered his hobbies on this but his dreams were shattered due to his lack of prerequisite mathematical skills. This is when his interest for reading science fiction books was born. He read both American and British science fiction literature and attended all the science fiction conventions held between 1963 and 1964 until he got his first job in the late 1960s. At a tender age of thirteen, Pratchett was already showing early signs of his literary genius when he wrote his first short story as a student for the school magazine which had a title of “The Hades Business”. It later got recognition by a press publishing company and was published when he was only fifteen.
