Jimmy's law license is suspended for a year, but he is not disbarred. To both pay his share of the rent on the office and make use of TV ad time for which he has already prepaid, Jimmy begins producing commercials for other businesses while using the on air alias Saul Goodman.
One of Better Call Saul 's memorable court scenes involves Jimmy placing a disguised decoy in the defendant's chair to trick a witness into claiming the decoy is the man he saw without question . Jimmy then reveals his client is actually at the back of the courtroom and gets him to stand up.
"Res ipsa Loquitur" is Latin for "The thing speaks for itself." In the first episode of Better Call Saul, we see Jimmy put on an endearing show for the jury while defending three young men. The prosecutor responds with no arguments, but merely plays the tape showing the crime in progress, which turned out to be decapitating a cadaver and performing sexual acts with the head.
In a video titled "Finding Fact in a Fictional Lawyer: How "real" is Saul Goodman?", Attorney and Youtube personality Matthew Benson says of the subject: " Most criminal defense attorneys do not actively work to cover up criminal activity while it's occurring. Goodman is effectively a co-conspirator in a lot of illegal activities. "
While the Saul of Better Call Saul is a lot more realistic than the Saul of Breaking Bad, he is still a tastefully cartoonish version of a lawyer. Some dubious criminal lawyers may associate themselves with gangsters and even dip their toes in crime, but Saul himself is an example of a (relatively) good man who's made all the wrong choices.
While still utilizing a healthy amount of dramatic license, Better Call Saul goes above and beyond when it comes to doing their homework and presenting a realistic world. While some might question the entertainment value of getting into thick of something as complicated and mundane as the practice of law, Saul's adventures are anything but mundane, and the result is a show that satisfies both lawyers and TV nerds alike.

In his life before he became the Saul Goodman we know and love, “Saul” was actually James “Jimmy” McGill: a public defender scrabbling at the bottom of the legal pit.
Better Call Saul season 5's finale offers a prime example, with Kim sarcastically stealing Jimmy's own catchphrase. Although she's not being serious, the moment highlights how Jimmy and Kim's positions have switched over the course of the season.
As a third layer, the light switch moment represents Better Call Saul 's ongoing battle between the Jimmy McGill and Saul Goodman personas.
After being let down by Chuck and reliving his youth in Cicero, Jimmy adopts a carefree, almost punk-rock attitude of relying solely on instinct. He quits the law and decides to live for himself, instead of trying to impress his brother or fit around the strict world of practicing law.
But during the episode's final sequence in the Davis & Main office, the (mostly) professional Jimmy McGill is back in business. The light switch, however, shows how easy the two personalities can flip - a visual metaphor promising the audience that Jimmy has no intention of leaving his Saul days behind. Howard being humiliated at Jimmy's bar hearing when Chuck's electromagnetic sensitivity is publicly revealed to be a mental illness. Howard's firm being slapped with a rate hike by their malpractice insurer when they learn that Chuck, with his untreated mental issues, is practicing law.
But after Chuck threatens to sue HHM, Howard goes the extra mile to call his bluff and sends his ass packing, taking the opportunity to humiliate him by having the entire office applaud his ‘retirement’ while he’s at it. The Dragon: To Chuck.
Chuck fires him despite being a good carer and for the crime of being Jimmy's friend. No Respect Guy: Only Jimmy and Kim show him much in the way of personal respect. Chuck is polite enough, but also a little harsh and condescending to him. Chuck also fires him as soon as he has outlived his usefulness to him.
Even though this was all part of Chuck's plan to entrap Jimmy and Ernesto did exactly what Chuck wanted, Ernesto was still fired for violating Chuck's orders.
Howard blaming himself for Chuck's death and baring his soul to Jimmy and Kim, who end up throwing the guilt back in his face. He begins suffering from insomnia as the firm struggles to pay off Chuck's estate and is forced to lay off staffers.
For Want of a Nail: Jimmy hired her entirely because she was the first applicant to show up and he wanted to get the business moving.
