Becoming a lawyer does require you to have a âlawyer brain.â You need to be thinking about the law, what you need to do for your clients, and how to further your understanding of general rules and principles. However, you also need to find a balance.

Why I Wrote this Book. Every day thousands of people just like you find themselves embroiled in a court case without the help of a lawyer. They donât know how the system works. They are not familiar with the law that applies to their case. Theyâre unfamiliar with court procedures. They donât understand the rules.
Many lawyers began the journey to law school because they loved school and the educational nourishment they received in their earlier scholastic endeavors. Many students arrive at law school after over a decade of schooling in which they performed frequent assessments and received feedback on how to improve and master a subject or task. This educational model supports students who incorporate feedback about their work to become stronger in the underlying subject matter. Before arriving at law school, students knew their teachers well and vice versa. Classmates pushed students to become stronger, better versions of themselves.

In a criminal trial, for example, you should certainly have a lawyer. Furthermore, you will also need an attorney for civil trials where you face over $100,000 in damages. You can get by without a lawyer if you are in small claims court. Also, you may be able to successfully represent yourself in a civil trial that is worth $25,000 to $100,000.

Most people start a law practice because they want to be their own boss. However, they usually donât understand what that means until they start. While setting your own hours and having more freedom and flexibility certainly is fun, it takes determination and discipline to get a business running properly.
If your current law practice isnât giving you enough of a challenge, you could start to feel bored and fall into a monotonous routine you canât get out of. While you donât want to be overwhelmed in any work environment, itâs important to feel challenged and engaged in the work you do to sustain a sense of purpose.
One of the many reasons people consider leaving their current job and starting their own law practice is the culture and office politics that surround them. Some people simply work better alone, others need to be with a group that motivates them and challenges them in positive ways.
