To qualify for an “A” rating an attorney had to be reported as “Very High” in their legal ability and had been practicing for at least 10 years, a “B” rating meant an attorney was rated “High” and had to be practicing for at least 5 years, and a “C” rating meant that the attorney was rated “fair” with no limitations on how long they were practicing. A second rating was also given to go along with the “A - B - C” rating and that was a “V,” meaning that the attorney's peers stated they had "Very High" ethical standards. Over the years this transitioned to “AV”, “BV”, and “CV” ratings - with an “AV” rating meaning that the attorney had reached the highest of professional excellence and is recognized for the highest levels of skill and integrity.

For more than 130 years, Martindale-Hubbell has been evaluating attorneys for their strong legal ability and high ethical standards through a Peer Review Rating system. Prior to the 1887 edition of Martindale’s American Law Directory, which was the first publication to provide such ratings to attorneys, there was no way of truly knowing if the lawyer you were considering to do business with was trustworthy, ethical, or skilled in the legal field.
Martindale-Hubbell uses a specific practice area list in the review process to help ensure that all lawyers are reviewed using equivalent practice areas, regardless of how individual lawyers choose to articulate their area of expertise. This allows users of peer reviews to compare and contrast lawyers with a specific area of practice. The Martindale-Hubbell area of practice list is based on user behavior, research on emerging areas of law, and other forms of legal research. Martindale-Hubbell updates the list regularly to reflect the changing needs of the legal industry.
Martindale-Hubbell subscribers also may choose up to two reviews with written feedback to display at the top of their client review section.
Martindale-Hubbell peer reviews allow reviewers to provide feedback on the lawyer under review. Feedback is displayed anonymously in conjunction with the review results. Lawyers are allowed to place a one-time comment next to any of the feedback. Martindale-Hubbell subscribers are able to highlight two peer feedback comments and position them at the top of their peer review display.
Martindale Hubbell’s peer review survey allows attorneys to provide feedback on a colleague’s ethical standards and legal ability. After selecting an area of practice and providing information regarding the attorney’s ethical standards, the reviewer selects scores on a 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) scale in five categories: Legal Knowledge, Analytical Capabilities, Judgment, Communication Ability and Legal Experience. Attorneys also have the option to provide additional written feedback, which displays as part of the review.

Individual peer reviews are posted on the attorney’s profile on Martindale.com and Lawyers.com within 24 hours of submission by the reference. When a minimum threshold of reviews are received, Martindale calculates the rating score and notifies the attorney of their award.

As you search for each peer reference, there may be some who do not appear in search results. Peer references need to be listed on Martindale.com – otherwise you will not be able to add them to your list and therefore they cannot rate you. If someone does not appear in search results, go to Martindale.com to see if they display their name differently on our website (John Smith vs. J. William Smith, for example).

The Martindale Hubbell rating that most attorneys post on their websites is a peer review rating. In other words, they are based on what other attorneys think of them, not clients. While few potential clients care about what another attorney thinks of you, they will probably be impressed by a badge that shows you’ve attained the “highest marks, ” or an AV Preeminent rating.
The next step is to request that Martindale begin the peer nomination process. While you don’t have to be a subscriber to do this, the site makes it easier on subscribers by giving them direct access to the Peer Reference Nomination Tool. Otherwise, you’ll need to email the company.
